A STEAM-KEROSENE CAR
I N the engine of this car there are
only eleven moving parts, and in the
whole car only twenty-two moving
parts. The gear set, clutch, and
drive shaft are missing. A few seconds
make it ready to start, even when
the motor is cold, and when started it
will travel 1200 miles on 25 gallons of
water.
Those who have always favored the
steam car of other clays because of its
easy riding qualities and lack of noise
have been dissatisfied with many things
however, mainly the steam generator or
boiler. The steam generator on this
"job" is made of twenty-eight identical
sections placed in an insulated casing.
Eight of the sections are used as the
economizer, and the remaining twenty
for the actual generation of steam. Underneath
this steam generator are the
combustion chamber and the exhaust for
burned gases. The intake water manifold
delivers water simultaneously to the
economizer sections through the lower
headers, and the water is forced in by
a crank-driven plunger pump.
The hot gases rise from the combustion
chamber, giving up their heat to the
closely grouped vertical tubes, pass over
a three-quarter inch wall of heat insulating
material, and a large number of their
remaining heat units are absorbed by the
relatively cool water flowing slowly up
through the economizer sections.
There are many reasons for the efficiency
of the engine. It is of una-flow
construction, the steam traveling through
it in one direction only. This makes it
thermally efficient, because cylinder con­

densation is overcome. There is no loss
of steam due to leakage, because the
valves are flat slide valves, accurately
fitted. There are no exhaust valves.
Lubricating oil is introduced into the
water, with the result that scaling is prevented
in the boiler, and the cylinders are
lubricated automatically and continuously.
The power is transmitted to the rear
axle by means of two spur gears. There
are no change speed gears, and no clutch,
and the engine has more power than is
needed to spin the wheels from rest on a
dry pavement.
The lighting, horn, and combustion
system is taken care of by a dynamo
located on the rear of the crank case, and
is driven from the main axle driving
gear.
