Because the tree shown on the
left would still be exposed to the
elements, and would decay still
further if not protected, the surgeons
filled all of the cavities in
the trunk and around the bands,
with concrete. This made the
giant much more sightly, and
kept out the borers and parasites
that bad made the life of the
arboreal veteran burdensome-.
REINFORCED WITH STEEL SUPPORTS
This tree had what might readily be called cancer of the heart. The
disease had so weakened and rotted the giant that it was but a question
of days before a wind strong enough to fell it completely should
arise The surgeons removed all the diseased wood, drove in a steel
piling support, and bound the heavy branches of the old oak to this by
steel bands aT*d bolts. With this done, the tree has eastly another
century's lease on life.
