Animals were treated with aluminum ammonium sulfate at different dose levels, and an additional group of animals received ammonium sulfate in order to determine whether ammonium or sulfate ions affected the results. There were no treatment-related effects on final body weight and on liver, kidney, and spleen weights, normalized to the body weight. No signs of gross behavioral alterations were observed in any animal during the treatment period. There were also no significant differences among controls and treatment groups in weight gain. The food consumption was 4.52 g/mouse per day for the control, and 4.63 g/mouse per day for the ammonium sulfate-treated group. Mean water consumption was 4.574 +/- 0.182 mL/mouse per day for controls, and 4.484 +/- 0.081 mL/mouse per day for ammonium sulfate treated animals. There were no significant differences for any cytokine between the control and ammonium sulfate treated groups (TNF alpha, IL-1beta, IFN-gamma, and beta-actin in the cerebrum), whereas aluminum treated groups demonstrated a significant increase of relative expression of TNFalpha in the cerebrum.
