extremes of 6.5 to 8.5, the pH was adjusted to 7.0 by the<br />

addition of 10% (v/v) NaOH or 10% (v/v) H2SO4.<br />

DILUTION WATER: Water quality was routinely monitored to<br />

characterize the diluent water and ensure its suitability<br />

according to the standard method for the examination of<br />

water and wastewater DIN 38 412, part 11, October 1982. The<br />

chemical characteristics are reported in the publication and<br />

are in accordance with standards required by current testing<br />

guidelines.<br />

PHYSICAL/CHEMICAL PARAMETERS:<br />

Determination of the temperature, dissolved oxygen and pH of<br />

each test solution were made in conjunction with the daily<br />

biological observation. The test temperature target was <strong>20</strong> -21<br />

°C. The photoperiod duration was 16 h of light.<br />

BIOLOGICAL PARAMETERS: biological observations were made<br />

daily. Survival, condition and behavioral information were<br />

recorded. Dead organism were removed when observed.<br />

EXPOSURE PERIOD: 96 hours.<br />

STATISTICAL METHOD: The 96-h LC50 value was derived using<br />

the Probit method and geometric means.<br />

Result: The LC50 for NH4E+ was quoted to be 130 mg/l, 149 and 162<br />

mg/l after 96, 48 and 24 hours, respectively.<br />

The LC50 values for (NH4)2SO4 after 24 and 48 hours were 600<br />

and 550 mg/L, respectively.<br />

Test duration was with two ages:<br />

1,8 g/5,9 cm and 2,1 g/6,2 cm.<br />

The LC50 value based of the analytical N -determination:<br />

LC50 related to NH3-N = 36.7 mg/l.<br />

LC50 related to NH3 = 0.76 mg/l<br />

The physico-chemical characteristics of the test water<br />

(temperature, pH and O2) showed only minor variations during<br />

the test period, as well as between different test aquaria in<br />

a test series (no details reported).<br />

TEST ORGANISMS: At least 14 days before the start of the<br />

experiment, the fishes were put in storage tanks in the<br />

experimental room. The fishes were fed once a day with<br />

commercial fish food. The light was automatically regulated<br />
