The purpose of this article is to assess the factors that influence black women in South Africa to usehair extensions. More specifically, the article seeks to address the following questions:a) Is the use of hair extensions by black women in South Africa a symptom of self-hatred or de-Africanisation?b) Is the use of hair extensions by black women in South Africa a symptom of their desire toconform to modernity and consistent with their value priorities?
METHODSubjectsConvenience sampling targeting 120 black women of African origin aged 18 years old and abovewas used. A total of 92 responses were received from the survey of which 87 were usable.MeasurementIn addition to items relating to demographic and classification information, the data collectioninstrument contained quantitative and qualitative items. The quantitative items required the respondents toa) rank eight hairstyles (see Figure 1) on a scale ranging from 1 (best) to 8 (worst), b) indicate their levelof agreement with six statements that women give about hair extensions on a five-point scale ranging from1 to 5 with the labels Strongly agree, Agree, Neither agree nor disagree, Disagree, and Strongly disagree,and c) indicate the extent to which they are like the people described in ten statements about values on afive-point scale ranging from 1 to 5 with the labels A lot alike, Alike, Somewhat alike, Not much alike, andNot at all alike. The two qualitative items required respondents to state their reasons for using hairextensions or state their reasons for not using hair extensions.ProcedureThe data collection instrument was distributed via the internet. The quantitative analysis wasperformed using SPSS (version 19) software. The qualitative section of the survey was analysed bygrouping the responses into categories in order to find common themes in the responses.
