4 Complete the appropriate information for the following fields.<br />

Name. Type a name for the active monitor. This name displays in the Active Monitor<br />

Library.<br />

Description. Type a short description for the monitor. This description displays next<br />

to the monitor in the Active Monitor Library.<br />

Service name. Click the Browse (...) button next to the Service Name text box to open<br />

the Browse for Service dialog, allowing you to locate any server/workstation running<br />

the service.<br />

Restart on failure. Select this option to have the monitor attempt to restart the<br />

service when it enters a down state.<br />

Use in Rescan. Select this option to have the monitor appear in the Active Monitor list<br />

on the Device Properties dialog. <strong>WhatsUp</strong> <strong>Gold</strong> adds the monitor type to the device<br />

during a rescan, which is launched using the Rescan button on the Device Properties<br />

dialog, if the protocol or service is active on the device.<br />

Note: <strong>WhatsUp</strong> <strong>Gold</strong> uses Windows Management Instrumentation (WMI) to verify the status<br />

of the NT Service Active Monitors you have configured. <strong>WhatsUp</strong> <strong>Gold</strong> currently only<br />

supports monitoring on Windows 2000 Service Pack 2 or higher, Windows XP Professional,<br />

and Windows 2003 or higher.<br />

5 Click OK to save changes.<br />

After configuring an active monitor in the Active Monitor Library, add the monitor to devices<br />

(on page 226).<br />

Adding and editing a Ping Monitor<br />

Configure an active ping monitor for <strong>WhatsUp</strong> <strong>Gold</strong> to send an ICMP (ping) command to the<br />

device. This is the default monitor added to all devices during discovery. If the device does<br />

not respond, the monitor is considered down.<br />

To add or edit a ping monitor:<br />

1 Click the Admin tab, then click Monitor Library. The Monitor Library dialog appears.<br />

2 Click the Active tab. The Active Monitor list appears.<br />

3 Click New, then select Ping Monitor from the list to create a new ping monitor. Click<br />

OK.<br />

Select the ping monitor you want to change from the list of current monitors, and then<br />

click Edit.<br />
