a) In your device list, find the device that represents the SQL <strong>Server</strong>.<br />

b) Right-click the device, then select Properties.<br />

c) Select Active Monitors.<br />

d) Click Add. The Active Monitor wizard appears.<br />

e) Select the monitor from the list, and continue with the wizard to configure any actions<br />

for the monitor.<br />

For more information on setting up an action, see Configuring an action (on page 273).<br />

Note: If you select Use in rescan, <strong>WhatsUp</strong> <strong>Gold</strong> adds the monitor to the Active Monitors list.<br />

From that list, you can select to scan for that service on all applications found during<br />

discovery.<br />

5 Click OK to save changes.<br />

After configuring an active monitor in the Active Monitor Library, add the monitor to devices<br />

(on page 226).<br />

xix) Getting Started with SQL <strong>Server</strong> Monitors<br />

1 Determine which SQL parameters to monitor.<br />

Note: To use some parameters, configure your System Data Source (ODBC) name for the SQL<br />

<strong>Server</strong>. This is done in the Windows Data Sources (ODBC) administrator.<br />

2 Determine which SQL services to monitor.<br />

3 Decide whether to create a single monitor with multiple parameters and services,<br />

several monitors with one parameter or service, or some combination. Whether you set<br />

up one monitor or many has a bearing on how the information is reported in <strong>WhatsUp</strong><br />

<strong>Gold</strong> logs and by actions. For example, if you create a single monitor to check disk<br />

usage, you can name it SQLDisk and it will be reported in logs with this name.<br />

4 Configure an SQL <strong>Server</strong> Monitor with your selected parameters and/or services.<br />

5 Add the SQL Monitor to the device that represents your SQL server.<br />

6 Set up an action to tell you when the monitor goes down or comes back up.<br />

Note: The monitor is reported down if any of the parameters or services in that monitor are<br />

down.<br />
