115drawers.” Do not code simple accessories that are not elaborated, like a feather insomeone’s hair, as Art. Also, do not code paint splashes or other simple non‐artistic usesof paint or artistic materials unless they are further elaborated. The contents within anobject of art are also coded; e.g., a painting or bas relief of two wolves would be codedas Art and A” (Meyer et al., 2011, p. 79).This example of how to code Art, like most descriptions in the R‐PAS manual, incorporates considerable elaboration and specification. Also, it exemplifies the type of specificguidelines provided about when not to code the score in question. Such guidelines anddistinctions are offered in an overall effort in R‐PAS to align codes with the interpretation andunderlying meaning of the score. In this case, if art content is to be interpreted as an effort toenhance, or artistic interests, intellectualization and possibly an interest in making thingsattractive and eye catching, one would follow the underlined prohibition and not code Art forpaint splashes. Thus, response process considerations are incorporated in R‐PAS coding, so asto align coding with interpretation. Similar elaborations are offered for many other codingdistinctions. Of particular interest are guidelines on how to handle small variations in popularresponses, for example whether to code Populars if cards are inverted, or if odd feature isadded.Form QualityAs noted earlier, Form Quality norms in the CS are inaccurate, and it is one of the scoreswith coding reliability problems. To address these problems, R‐PAS incorporates a completelynew FQ table, based on a huge amount of new international data. The new R‐PAS FQ Tableincorporates two traditional, foundational components of perceptual accuracy: (1) fit or howwell the object matches the features at the location where it is perceived, and (2) frequency orhow often the object is seen at the particular blot location. It is measured by rating howaccurate and easy to see an object is at a specific location. For example, how easy is it to see acat’s face to the whole with the middle white space on Card II, or a dog to the D1 Popular areato Card VIII? R‐PAS fit ratings involved precisely this type of judgment on a one‐to‐five scaleincluded in 50,000 ratings of 5,060 response objects from many countries, including Brazil.
