present form because it was felt that <strong>the</strong> point <strong>of</strong><br />

religion (as between Mohammedan and non-Moham-<br />

medan) was perhaps a better dividing line, on account<br />

<strong>of</strong> its definiteness, than <strong>the</strong> vague, indefinite, and<br />

perhaps undefinable, quality <strong>of</strong> wildness.<br />

The title-page bears <strong>the</strong> names <strong>of</strong> two authors, but<br />

by far <strong>the</strong> greater part <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> book (including <strong>the</strong> Intro-<br />

duction) was written by <strong>the</strong> one whose name stands<br />

first, <strong>the</strong> special task <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> o<strong>the</strong>r having been confined<br />

to writing <strong>the</strong> part dealing with Language, toge<strong>the</strong>r<br />

with <strong>the</strong> Appendix relating <strong>the</strong>reto, in <strong>the</strong> second<br />

volume. Each author has, as far as possible, revised<br />

and checked <strong>the</strong> work <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> o<strong>the</strong>r, but <strong>the</strong> ultimate<br />

responsibility <strong>of</strong> each is to be apportioned to his own<br />

share <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> book.<br />

Moreover, though <strong>the</strong> authors <strong>the</strong>mselves have<br />

contributed <strong>the</strong> greater part <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> original material<br />

which <strong>the</strong> book contains, <strong>the</strong>y are indebted to o<strong>the</strong>rs<br />

for a considerable amount <strong>of</strong> hi<strong>the</strong>rto unpublished<br />

information, which has greatly enhanced <strong>the</strong> value <strong>of</strong><br />

<strong>the</strong> work. Their acknowledgments are particularly<br />
