The Names <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Tribes.<br />

In discussing <strong>the</strong> affinities <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> various <strong>races</strong> and<br />

tribes <strong>of</strong> wild men in <strong>the</strong> <strong>Malay</strong> <strong>Peninsula</strong>, it is im-<br />

portant to get a clear idea <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> exact meaning <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

names which <strong>the</strong> <strong>Malay</strong>s apply to <strong>the</strong>m, and which<br />

are taken, for <strong>the</strong> most part, ei<strong>the</strong>r from <strong>the</strong> natural<br />

(geographical) features <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> country in which <strong>the</strong><br />

particular race <strong>of</strong> "wild men" in question live, or<br />

from <strong>the</strong> stage <strong>of</strong> civilisation at which <strong>the</strong>y happen<br />

to have arrived.<br />

The commonest <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>se names, with <strong>the</strong>ir English<br />

equivalents, are as follows :<br />
