<strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> butt, a peculiarity which may be seen in <strong>the</strong><br />

blowpipe-darts <strong>of</strong> Borneo.^<br />

The only o<strong>the</strong>r contents <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> quiver were two<br />

rolled-up pieces <strong>of</strong> old chintz cloth, and a spear-shaped<br />

wooden spatula, still coated with poison,<br />

In view <strong>of</strong> all <strong>the</strong> evidence, and in spite <strong>of</strong> slight<br />

differences, I think <strong>the</strong>re need be no hesitation what-<br />

ever in identifying both <strong>the</strong> blowpipe and quiver as a<br />

variety <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> " Benua-Jakun " blowpipe and quiver<br />

which Vaughan-Stevens obtained in <strong>the</strong> eastern part<br />

<strong>of</strong> Johor, in spite <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> fact that this specimen was ob-<br />

tained in Kuantan, north <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Pahang, a fact which<br />

disagrees with Vaughan-Stevens' own statement to<br />

<strong>the</strong> effect that this type <strong>of</strong> blowpipe is not found (in <strong>the</strong><br />

<strong>Malay</strong> <strong>Peninsula</strong>) north <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> river in question. This<br />

particular specimen, at all events, has <strong>the</strong> additional<br />

interest <strong>of</strong> more nearly approaching <strong>the</strong> blowpipe <strong>of</strong> Peru<br />

than any o<strong>the</strong>r specimen yet recorded from this part<br />

<strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> world—a fact which should be <strong>of</strong> special interest<br />

to <strong>the</strong> students <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> problems <strong>of</strong> distribution.^<br />

The Bloivpipe.<br />

Benua-Jakun.—One <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Kuantan types <strong>of</strong> blowpipe<br />

is found also among <strong>the</strong> Benua-Jakun. These<br />

tribes use a peculiar form <strong>of</strong> blowpipe, <strong>the</strong> internal tube<br />

<strong>of</strong> which is made in a very primitive fashion, <strong>of</strong> wood,<br />

though its outer casing is as usual <strong>of</strong> bamboo. Its<br />

length and calibre vary with <strong>the</strong> individual maker.'<br />

It is exceedingly rare and hard to obtain, especially<br />

as it takes sixteen days to make. It is made<br />

from <strong>the</strong> wood <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> " penaga " tree ("penaghur,"<br />

sic), a sapling <strong>of</strong> which is felled and split through-<br />

out its entire length. The two halves are <strong>the</strong>n<br />
