CHAP. XI SAVAGE MALAYS OF JOHOR 563<br />

criminal in <strong>the</strong>ir eyes, thieves, pilferers, and liars.<br />

Some <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>m made <strong>the</strong> sensible remark that <strong>the</strong><br />

numerous " sembahyangs," or prayers <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>Malay</strong>s,<br />

could not be <strong>of</strong> any use to <strong>the</strong>m so long as <strong>the</strong>y re-<br />

mained addicted to so many vices ; but<br />

<strong>the</strong>y took<br />

great care before thus expressing <strong>the</strong>mselves to look<br />

about, for <strong>the</strong>y knew that if any <strong>Malay</strong> should chance<br />

to overhear <strong>the</strong>m, <strong>the</strong>y would not remain long un-<br />

injured. But <strong>the</strong> Jakun not only hates and abhors<br />

<strong>the</strong> <strong>Malay</strong>s, he fears <strong>the</strong>m as well ; and what makes<br />

his position yet more irksome, is <strong>the</strong> necessity he is<br />

under <strong>of</strong> being obliged to trade with <strong>the</strong>m. The<br />

" dammar " and o<strong>the</strong>r products he finds in <strong>the</strong> forest<br />

cannot be disposed <strong>of</strong> except through <strong>the</strong> medium<br />

<strong>of</strong> <strong>Malay</strong>s, and this establishes a daily intercourse<br />

between <strong>the</strong>m. But what is really surprising is that<br />

in <strong>the</strong>se communications <strong>the</strong>y always remain on good<br />

terms, and that although <strong>the</strong> Jakun is rude and wild,<br />

he yet knows how to give <strong>the</strong> <strong>Malay</strong> dc fcaic benite<br />

de cour, and habitually keep great harmony and peace<br />

in his relations with <strong>the</strong>m. But if <strong>the</strong> Jakun hates<br />

and fears <strong>the</strong> <strong>Malay</strong>s, <strong>the</strong> <strong>Malay</strong>s in return both<br />

despise and fear extremely <strong>the</strong> Jakun. The <strong>Malay</strong>s<br />

consider <strong>the</strong> Jakun as infidels (" kafir"), and <strong>the</strong>refore<br />

despicable, and as being in a rank only a little higher<br />

than animals ;<br />

but<br />

on <strong>the</strong> o<strong>the</strong>r hand <strong>the</strong> <strong>Malay</strong>s<br />

<strong>the</strong>mselves are superstitious in <strong>the</strong> extreme. ¥or<br />
