till <strong>the</strong> liquor is close to <strong>the</strong> brim, and one end <strong>of</strong> a<br />

roll <strong>of</strong> bamboo shavings (about 4 inches long) is in-<br />

serted in <strong>the</strong> liquor, <strong>the</strong> o<strong>the</strong>r end being placed in a<br />

special receptacle made <strong>of</strong> bark, so as to draw <strong>of</strong>f <strong>the</strong><br />

poison by suction. The liquor thus drawn <strong>of</strong>f is put<br />

back into <strong>the</strong> pot and root-shavings <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> " umpas<br />

padi," "koopur,"' " prachek,""' " mundess," " chantong<br />

badak," and "gadong"'^ are added. The pot is <strong>the</strong>n<br />

boiled for about ten minutes more, when it is again<br />

set on <strong>the</strong> stand and skimmed with a kind <strong>of</strong> woolly<br />

leaf— that <strong>of</strong> a plant called " chapa-neng." * The<br />

bark receptacle (covered with a species <strong>of</strong> sieve-<br />

shaped filter) is now set on <strong>the</strong> ground (underneath<br />

<strong>the</strong> forked stand on which <strong>the</strong> pot is resting). A<br />

funnel is made <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> woolly leaves referred to, and<br />

<strong>the</strong> liquor drawn <strong>of</strong>f into <strong>the</strong> funnel by <strong>the</strong> suction <strong>of</strong><br />

<strong>the</strong> bamboo shavings (already described), a few fine<br />

punctures being made in <strong>the</strong> bottom <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> funnel to<br />

facilitate <strong>the</strong> process.^<br />

The pot is <strong>the</strong>n rinsed, <strong>the</strong> liquor put back, and<br />

<strong>the</strong> "ipoh"" and "tuba"" added (<strong>the</strong> latter being<br />

first, however, pounded and mixed in <strong>the</strong> bark re-<br />

ceptacle with a little liquor from <strong>the</strong> pot).^<br />

The bark receptacle is <strong>the</strong>n rinsed and <strong>the</strong> rinsings<br />

added to <strong>the</strong> pot, toge<strong>the</strong>r with a pod <strong>of</strong> chillies<br />

(" Spanish pepper").'*<br />

After ten minutes' boiling <strong>the</strong> pot is again removed<br />

and set down on <strong>the</strong> stand, and <strong>the</strong> process <strong>of</strong> filtra-<br />

tion repeated in exactly <strong>the</strong> same manner as before.<br />
