The studies contained in this book are an expansion of the corresponding
sections in The Golden Bough. By far the greater portion of them is new, and they
make by themselves a fairly complete and, the author hopes, intelligible whole.
In studying afresh these three Oriental worships, Dr. Frazer has paid more attention
than formerly to the natural features of the countries in which they arose, because
he is more than ever persuaded that religion, like all other institutions, has been
profoundly influenced by physical environment, and cannot be understood without
some appreciation of those aspects of external nature which stamp themselves
indelibly on the thoughts, the habits, the whole life of a people.

Dr. Rivers recently spent some time visiting the Todas, a most interesting
pastoral people of Southern India. They are an isolated and quite peculiar people,
and have been described several times ; but Dr. Rivers has obtained far fuller
information than any previous observer, especially with regard to their most
elaborate religious ritual, which centres round the dairy. The dairy, in fact,
forms their temple. Dr. Rivers obtained many interesting photographs which
serve to illustrate his work.
