[The patterns for <strong>the</strong> various Diseases primarily<br />

when different<br />

represent <strong>the</strong> affected part <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> body ;<br />

parts <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> body are affected <strong>the</strong> patterns are com-<br />

bined, but <strong>the</strong> exact rules which determine <strong>the</strong><br />

method <strong>of</strong> composition are f<strong>org</strong>otten. Only this is<br />

certain, that in cases where <strong>the</strong> "was" or " pawer "<br />

flowers (in <strong>the</strong> case <strong>of</strong> any particular Disease) are <strong>of</strong><br />

especial value for healing purposes, only repetitions<br />

<strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> same pattern appear on <strong>the</strong> comb, and no<br />

o<strong>the</strong>rs. If <strong>the</strong> central panel shows a pattern which<br />

covers <strong>the</strong> entire panel from left to right, it is<br />

called "makeii" (" makiee ")— see, for example, 9B.<br />

If, however, panel five is covered with a row <strong>of</strong><br />

repeated figures (as in 19B), each separate figure<br />

or emblem is called "sumpid."- If <strong>the</strong> fifth panel is<br />

covered with an unrepeated pattern which entirely<br />

covers <strong>the</strong> solid part <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> comb, it is called " ne-<br />

ning"^—see, for example, 68. Any special sign in<br />

one <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> central panels, or <strong>the</strong> " sumpid," etc., is<br />

called " ob." The figures delineated in <strong>the</strong> plate are<br />

<strong>the</strong> accepted emblems representing various parts <strong>of</strong><br />

<strong>the</strong> human anatomy, which appear in <strong>the</strong> patterns ot<br />

<strong>the</strong> central panel. *]<br />
