Pang-an or E. Semang*.-—The following is a summary<br />

<strong>of</strong> Vaughan-Stevens' description <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> preparation <strong>of</strong><br />

Ipoh poison by <strong>the</strong> Pangan. The sap <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> tree<br />

(obtained by shaving <strong>the</strong> stem and bruising it with<br />

<strong>the</strong> back <strong>of</strong> a " parang ") is poured into a vessel made <strong>of</strong><br />

twisted palm-leaf It is stirred till it turns bright<br />

yellow, when it is poured into a pot for boiling. The<br />

bark <strong>of</strong> " perghoo," " choichoi," " kree," " lendow,"<br />

and " garsung "<br />

is put into a bamboo with <strong>the</strong> leaves<br />

<strong>of</strong> " rumpi " (j-zV. ? " rami ") and " jelatang " " ; water<br />

is<br />

added, and <strong>the</strong> mixture heated for about ten minutes.<br />

The liquor is <strong>the</strong>n added to <strong>the</strong> pot, <strong>the</strong> lees <strong>of</strong> wet<br />

bark being wrapped in a leaf and wrung out to extract<br />

<strong>the</strong> remainder <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> liquid. Meanwhile <strong>the</strong> bark <strong>of</strong><br />

" Blay kechil," " Blay besar," " Blay hitam," and " Bhoi<br />

is similarly boiled and added to <strong>the</strong> liquor. The tubers<br />

<strong>of</strong> "gadong" and "kepayang" fruits are cut up small and<br />

boiled for four hours, when <strong>the</strong>y too are added to <strong>the</strong><br />

mixture. The fruit <strong>of</strong> "s'lowung" and " chow " and <strong>the</strong><br />

roots <strong>of</strong> " bal," " sedudo'," and " begung " are boiled in<br />

yet ano<strong>the</strong>r baml)ooand put into <strong>the</strong> pot with <strong>the</strong> rest.<br />

The sap <strong>of</strong> two rattans (Riong and Butong) follows,<br />

and <strong>the</strong> heads <strong>of</strong> centipedes and snakes and scorpions'<br />

tails are smoked between two knife-blades and added<br />

also. Fresh Rengut (" ringhut ") fruits may now be<br />

added if procurable, and <strong>the</strong> pot containing <strong>the</strong> mixture<br />

is boiled till its contents are reduced by one-half'<br />

The contents are <strong>the</strong>n poured through a palm-leaf<br />

funnel into a clean bamboo, <strong>the</strong> pot washed, <strong>the</strong><br />
