The skin-colour <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> darkest <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Jakuns corresponded to No. 28 <strong>of</strong><br />

Broca's table. The degree <strong>of</strong> admixture <strong>of</strong> <strong>Malay</strong> blood determines <strong>the</strong> colour,<br />

making it lighter where <strong>the</strong> sun does not affect it.<br />

[This remark, however, is doubtless based upon Vaughan- Stevens's Pan-<br />

Negrito <strong>the</strong>ory, <strong>the</strong> real interpretation <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> facts being, no doubt, that <strong>the</strong><br />

lighter (and more nearly <strong>Malay</strong>) colour is due to <strong>the</strong> purer (aboriginal) <strong>Malay</strong>an<br />

When <strong>the</strong> skin, as is especially <strong>the</strong> case among <strong>the</strong> Jakuns, is much affected<br />

by cutaneous disorders (" Kurap "), <strong>the</strong> persons <strong>of</strong> both sexes emit an unpleasant<br />

rank odour, which is still noticeable after washing.-'<br />
