Perak Semang-. — The clothing <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Perak<br />

Semang is similar to that <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Negritos <strong>of</strong> Kedah.^<br />

As <strong>the</strong>y have no manufactures <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>ir own, <strong>the</strong>ir<br />

clothing consists chiefly <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> inner bark <strong>of</strong> trees. A<br />

few, however, who venture to approach <strong>the</strong> <strong>Malay</strong>an<br />

villages obtain a little cloth in exchange for various<br />

kinds <strong>of</strong> jungle produce.''<br />

Necklaces.<br />

Kedah Semang.—The simplest form <strong>of</strong> necklace<br />

worn by <strong>the</strong> Semang in Kedah took <strong>the</strong> form <strong>of</strong> a<br />

simple neck-string or ligature ei<strong>the</strong>r <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> " Rockvein<br />

" fungus or <strong>of</strong> fibre <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> " bertam " palm<br />

[Eiigeissona), and was sometimes fur<strong>the</strong>r embellished<br />

by stringing upon it <strong>the</strong> leaves <strong>of</strong> certain trees in<br />

alternation with knots <strong>of</strong> palm-leaf (ZzV?
