<strong>the</strong> Batin Hamba Raja. The Lenggiu, a branch <strong>of</strong><br />

<strong>the</strong> Endau, was under <strong>the</strong> Batin Setia Raja, who was<br />

also <strong>the</strong>ir great executive <strong>of</strong>ficer ; his relationship<br />

to <strong>the</strong> Batin Anak Setia having some resemblance to<br />

that between <strong>the</strong> <strong>Malay</strong> Temenggong and <strong>the</strong> Sultan<br />

<strong>of</strong> Johor. The Sungei Selai, again, was under <strong>the</strong><br />

Batin Singa Dewa. The Sembrong in <strong>the</strong> vicinity<br />

<strong>of</strong> Tanjong Bongko' was under <strong>the</strong> Batin Setia Bati,<br />

higher up near Gagau under <strong>the</strong> Batin Jukrah, and still<br />

nearer its source under Batin Dewa Kasuma (?) and<br />

under <strong>the</strong> Batin Bentara. All <strong>the</strong>se, except <strong>the</strong> two last,<br />

were within <strong>the</strong> Pahang boundary. The local <strong>Malay</strong><br />

authority, who, in matters <strong>of</strong> government, possessed<br />

a nominal power, and whose relationship with regard<br />

to <strong>the</strong> Benua was properly that <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> maintainer and<br />

regulator <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>Malay</strong>an trade monopoly, was called<br />

To' Jinang. The Benua on <strong>the</strong> Batu Pahat and its<br />

branches were under <strong>the</strong> Bentara or Mangki {^sic, ?<br />

Mangku) Pemanggun <strong>of</strong> Bekok. The jurisdiction <strong>of</strong><br />

<strong>the</strong> <strong>Malay</strong> Penghulu <strong>of</strong> Batu Pahat had once ex-<br />

tended to Ginting Batu on <strong>the</strong> eastern Sembrong, but<br />
