THE SOCIAL ORDER
a grown-up son, but a man might leave his property
to any relation he pleased.'
Chiefs.
Udai.—The Udai are described by Newbold as
being " without either laws or any form of govern-
ment,"" but this statement must not be taken au pied
de la lettre.
Orang Laut or Sea-Jakun.
The Orang Laut system of chiefship seems to have
been the same as that of the Jakun, the titles of the
tribal chiefs including those of Batin, Jinang, Jukrah,
Penglima, Hulubalang, etc. Even among the tribes
to be found at the present day on the island of
Singapore (e.g. the men of Kallang), these titles are
still preserved, in spite of the close proximity and
influence of Singapore itself.
With this exception, however, there is scarcely a
single remark extant to inform us what were the
actual methods of law and government as practised
by the Orang Laut, though there can be little doubt
that they were practically identical with those of the
Jakun. With regard to the rule of succession to
property, we may infer from Logan's remark about
the Sabimba^ [that the father's property descended
to the sons], that it was actually identical with the
Jakun rule.
