works towards <strong>the</strong> middle. On <strong>the</strong> o<strong>the</strong>r hand,<br />

<strong>the</strong> design for <strong>the</strong> central panel is usually <strong>the</strong> first part<br />

to be incised by way <strong>of</strong> a commencement. The vari-<br />

ous kinds <strong>of</strong> cross-lines have already been partially<br />

described in connection with <strong>the</strong> comb patterns.^ [The<br />

following rules, however, have also to be observed.<br />

The not uncommon figure a must never be hatched<br />

at <strong>the</strong> point <strong>of</strong> intersection.- The right-angled cross-<br />

lines are scarcely ever inserted, except where <strong>the</strong>y can<br />

be given <strong>the</strong>ir full length (see figure b). Exceptions<br />

may, however, be seen in quiver A2, part 3, in 8 and<br />

9,<br />

1 1 and 1 2 (lines counted from <strong>the</strong> left). Special<br />

attention should be given to <strong>the</strong> cross-lines <strong>of</strong> two<br />

pairs <strong>of</strong> parallel lines in and about <strong>the</strong> space formed<br />

by <strong>the</strong>ir intersection (see, for instance, figure b, as<br />

well as quiver O, quiver O, parts 3, 4, and 6). To<br />

<strong>the</strong>se should be added many o<strong>the</strong>r kinds <strong>of</strong> cross-lines<br />

which help to produce a difference in <strong>the</strong> patterns {e.g.<br />

parallel and slanting cross-lines). The effect <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>se<br />

will become evident through a closer consideration <strong>of</strong><br />

<strong>the</strong> designs. Their number is usually quite arbitrary.]<br />

Very short strokes have <strong>the</strong> same significance as<br />

dots :<br />

are produced by means <strong>of</strong> a blunt-pointed<br />

knife (see, e.g., No. 24). The broad black stripes and<br />

figures <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> designs here given are produced in <strong>the</strong><br />

originals by peeling <strong>the</strong> part and colouring it black.^<br />
