MODES OF BARTER<br />

<strong>the</strong>y frequently leariu to work upon <strong>the</strong> superstitions<br />

<strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>Malay</strong>s (when <strong>the</strong>y had no products to barter,<br />

and wished to procure a supply <strong>of</strong> tobacco), by pre-<br />

senting <strong>the</strong>m with medicines which <strong>the</strong>y pretended to<br />

derive from particular shrubs and trees in <strong>the</strong> woods,<br />

and represented as efficacious for <strong>the</strong> cure <strong>of</strong> headache<br />

and o<strong>the</strong>r complaints.'<br />

Pangfan.—The Pangan or Eastern Semang that<br />

we saw at Ulu Aring in Kelantan used to depend<br />

upon <strong>the</strong> <strong>Malay</strong> hamlet <strong>of</strong> Kampong Buntal for <strong>the</strong>ir<br />

rice, as well as for <strong>the</strong>ir salt and <strong>the</strong>ir tobacco, and<br />

had come down, in fact, at <strong>the</strong> time when we were<br />

<strong>the</strong>re for <strong>the</strong> purpose <strong>of</strong> obtaining this latter commodity,<br />

<strong>of</strong> which I myself was able to present <strong>the</strong>m<br />

with a considerable supply. The only o<strong>the</strong>r articles<br />

for which <strong>the</strong>y were usually indebted to <strong>the</strong> <strong>Malay</strong>s<br />

were <strong>the</strong> cloths <strong>the</strong>y wrapped round <strong>the</strong>ir waists, and<br />

<strong>the</strong> blades <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>ir jungle-knives and spear-heads. On<br />

<strong>the</strong> o<strong>the</strong>r hand, one <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> men that we observed was<br />

in possession <strong>of</strong> a razor which had been " given " him<br />

(doubtless in return for more than its fair equivalent<br />

in o<strong>the</strong>r commodities) by <strong>the</strong> <strong>Malay</strong> chief or " Peng-<br />

hulu " <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> village.<br />

Kedah Semang. — The Semang <strong>of</strong> Kedah had<br />

<strong>the</strong>mselves grown a small field <strong>of</strong> rice, and to <strong>the</strong><br />

extent <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>ir harvest were independent <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> local<br />

<strong>Malay</strong>s, so far as <strong>the</strong>ir food-supply was concerned.<br />

Never<strong>the</strong>less <strong>the</strong> scantiness <strong>of</strong> this stock made it<br />

quite clear that in a few months <strong>the</strong>y would have<br />

come to an end <strong>of</strong> it, and would ei<strong>the</strong>r be obliged to<br />

not quite just to<br />

Similar charges are, <strong>of</strong> course, <strong>of</strong>ten<br />

made by <strong>the</strong> <strong>Malay</strong>s (from whom this<br />

<strong>the</strong> Semang, who undoubtedly <strong>of</strong>fered idea may have been derived), but on<br />

to <strong>the</strong> <strong>Malay</strong>s what <strong>the</strong>y <strong>the</strong>mselves proper investigation <strong>the</strong>y prove to be<br />
