THE LOWER NIGER
AND ITS TRIBES
BY
Major ARTHUR GLYN LEONARD
late 2nd batt. east lancashire regiment
author of
'the cajMel: its uses and management,' and 'how we made Rhodesia'
In his Preface to this work Dr. A. C. Haddon points out that the author has all
his life been deeply interested in comparative religion, and that by the attention he
has paid to Aryan and Hindu mythology, as well as to the natives of Asia and
Africa, he had prepared himself for the detailed study of a particular people.
Endowed with sympathy and an earnest desire to sec everything from the native
point of view—to "think black," as Miss Kingsley tersely put it— Major Leonard
has studied the natives of the Lower Niger at first hand. He draws a vivid picture
of the wonderful Niger delta, and traces its effects on the mind and nature of its
inhabitants. His studies have led him to the conclusion that the European has
never understood the Negro, and the present volume is his interpretation of Negro
thought and expression.
AT THE BACK OF
THE BLACK MANS MIND
OR, NOTES ON THE KINGLY OFFICE
IN WEST AFRICA
BY
R. E. DENNETT
AUTHOR OF
' NOTES ON THE FOLK-LORE OF THE FJORT,' ETC.
In this work the author's twofold object is to show (i) that, concurrent with
fetichism or Jujuism, there is in Africa a religion which gives a much higher, conception
of God than is generally acknowledged, and (2) to make clear the vital
importance of the kingly office to the African communities. He believes that the
lasting effect of missionary effort, and the simplification of the work of governing
the natives, depend to a great extent on a fuller recognition of these truths concerning
the religious and political systems of the African tribes.
