hardened <strong>of</strong>fender, <strong>the</strong> Batin would send him some<br />

miles away into <strong>the</strong> jungle to live by himself,'<br />

III.<br />

—<br />

Jakun.<br />

Blandas.—The Blandas <strong>of</strong> K. Langat have <strong>the</strong> same<br />

system <strong>of</strong> government as that <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Selangor Besisi,<br />

They have fur<strong>the</strong>r, however, condensed <strong>the</strong> description<br />

<strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> limits <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>ir jurisdiction in a series <strong>of</strong> pro-<br />

verbial or legal " maxims," which have all <strong>the</strong> force <strong>of</strong> a<br />

duly formulated, though unwritten, code, and which are<br />

invoked by <strong>the</strong>ir chiefs for <strong>the</strong> purpose <strong>of</strong> settling<br />

any disputes that may arise among <strong>the</strong>m. The<br />

following are a few examples which I took down<br />

from <strong>the</strong> lips <strong>of</strong> one <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>ir chiefs :<br />

^—<br />

-<br />

1. The laws <strong>of</strong> Batin 'langgong Gagah :<br />

15y hill and hill-foot, cave, hill-basin<br />

Lies <strong>the</strong> path, prevail <strong>the</strong> customs,<br />

Of <strong>the</strong> kin o' <strong>the</strong> wasting millet.<br />

2. The Batin and <strong>the</strong> Jinang tarry<br />

At <strong>the</strong> limits <strong>of</strong> fulf flood-tide ;<br />

The Land-folk's chief frequents <strong>the</strong> hill-tops.<br />

His sway is o'er <strong>the</strong> upper Langat,<br />

His are <strong>the</strong> dues <strong>of</strong> yams and 'gharu,'<br />

' Ch^rok,' ' los,' tin-sand, mine-paddocks ;<br />

'Tis his to feed upon wild aroids,<br />

His are rattan and gutta taban.<br />

3. To <strong>the</strong> Batin <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Sea-folk *<br />

'Longs <strong>the</strong> bellying sail <strong>of</strong> palm-leaf,<br />

'Longs <strong>the</strong> swirling <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> oar-blade,<br />

Anchor dropjied and S])rcaded awning.<br />

Clearing, felling for fish-fences,<br />

I lunting fish, and sting-ray spearing.<br />

4. The laws are at <strong>the</strong> top <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> trunk,<br />

The genealogy at <strong>the</strong> bottom,<br />

The laws <strong>of</strong> our chiefs follow <strong>the</strong> Raja's ruling.<br />

5. Where <strong>the</strong> wild-bees' nest swings, where <strong>the</strong> wait-a-bit creepers fall away from<br />

<strong>the</strong>ir supports,<br />

'<br />

J. A. G. Campbell, p. 242. probably means 2 Said to be a son <strong>of</strong> To' Klambu,<br />

" <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> kinsfolk who<br />

live upon millet" (instead <strong>of</strong> ricej, this<br />

who lived and died at Tunggul Si being a custom <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> wilder tribes.<br />

Jaga. * I.e. <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Besisi (as a Coast tribe).<br />

^ The expression is obscure, but " Cherok " and "los " are unexplained.
