kill, and when brought in contact from time to time<br />

with more civilised people, showed no objection to any<br />

kind <strong>of</strong> food, save <strong>the</strong> fowl, which <strong>the</strong>y scrupulously<br />

avoided. The wild animals and birds eaten were <strong>the</strong><br />

wild pig,^ mouse-deer or chevrotain - (" plandok "), <strong>the</strong><br />

monkeys called " k'ra " ^ and "lotong,"^ <strong>the</strong> civet-cat*<br />

("musang"), <strong>the</strong> squirrel (" tupai "), "kubong,"^ monitor<br />

lizard' ("bewak"), "malok," imperial pigeon("pergam"),<br />

" kalongkang," " koko," mynah bird® (" tiong "), green<br />

'*<br />

(" punai "), <strong>the</strong> oil <strong>of</strong> snakes, and many kinds <strong>of</strong><br />

fish. The roe-deer ^'^ (" kijang "), <strong>the</strong> sambhur deer<br />

(" rusa "'), elephant, and bear are not found in Battam.<br />

Flesh <strong>of</strong> all kinds was cooked by <strong>the</strong> men, vegetables<br />

by <strong>the</strong> women. ^^<br />

Ano<strong>the</strong>r observer <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Sabimba (Thomson), who<br />

visited <strong>the</strong>m shortly after Logan, tells us that <strong>the</strong>ir<br />

food consisted <strong>of</strong> rice as <strong>the</strong> staple article, but that<br />

<strong>the</strong>y added to this <strong>the</strong> flesh <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> hog, monkey,<br />

snake, and ape, and birds <strong>of</strong> all kinds excepting that<br />

<strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> fowl, for <strong>the</strong> reasons stated in Logan's paper.<br />

Their vegetables consisted <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> wild fruits <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

jungle. This tribe was much more helpless than <strong>the</strong><br />

Orang Sletar, being entirely dependent on <strong>the</strong> <strong>Malay</strong>s<br />

for <strong>the</strong>ir arms and for <strong>the</strong> greater part <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>ir food.<br />

They were unacquainted with <strong>the</strong> brewing <strong>of</strong> inebriat-<br />

ing liquors, though <strong>the</strong>y informed Thomson that <strong>the</strong>ir<br />

tribe formerly possessed <strong>the</strong> art. In <strong>the</strong>ir habits <strong>the</strong>y<br />

were, <strong>the</strong>refore, as temperate as <strong>the</strong> <strong>Malay</strong>s.^"<br />
