loss to <strong>the</strong> cause <strong>of</strong> Indo-Chinese research), S. H,<br />

o<strong>the</strong>rs, for help in connexion with cognate or allied<br />

<strong>races</strong> and languages. Several <strong>of</strong>ficers <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Govern-<br />

ment Service in <strong>the</strong> <strong>Malay</strong> <strong>Peninsula</strong>, particularly<br />

Messrs. L. Wray, junr., A. Hale, H. N. Ridley, and<br />

F. W. Knocker, have also been kind enough to read<br />

portions <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> book in pro<strong>of</strong>, and have contributed,<br />

as <strong>the</strong> fruit <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>ir experiences, no small amount <strong>of</strong><br />

material in <strong>the</strong> shape <strong>of</strong> comments and criticisms.<br />

Mr. A. Cabaton was good enough to read <strong>the</strong> Com-<br />

parative Vocabulary in pro<strong>of</strong>, and his intimate know-<br />

ledge <strong>of</strong> several Indo-Chinese languages enabled him<br />

to enrich it by many valuable etymological sugges-<br />

tions. To him <strong>the</strong> authors are also indebted for<br />

access to <strong>the</strong> unpublished material <strong>of</strong> Messrs. P.<br />

Odend'hal and A. Lavallee.<br />

For <strong>the</strong> illustrations, which form a notable addition<br />

to <strong>the</strong> value <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> work (<strong>the</strong> greater part having<br />

been taken specially for <strong>the</strong> occasion), <strong>the</strong> authors<br />

are also indebted to <strong>the</strong> help <strong>of</strong> many hands.<br />

Mr. T. J. M'^Gregor has contributed (at his own<br />

charges) <strong>the</strong> largest part <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> original photographs ;<br />
