210 THE QUMRAN CONCEPT OF TIME<br />

As Beckwith rightly observes, “if this is what <strong>the</strong> men of Qumran <strong>and</strong><br />

<strong>the</strong>ir literary mentors believed, it is certain that <strong>the</strong>y would not have recognized<br />

any need for intercalation; <strong>the</strong>y would, on <strong>the</strong> contrary, have<br />

repudiated such a suggestion.” 23<br />

Eventually, however, <strong>the</strong> one-<strong>and</strong>-a-quarter-day discrepancy between<br />

<strong>the</strong> 364-day calendar <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong> actual length of <strong>the</strong> year would result in natural<br />

phenomena appearing to occur at <strong>the</strong> wrong time: <strong>the</strong> seasons, celestial<br />

bodies (especially <strong>the</strong> stars), <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong> sprouting of crops will seem to<br />

be late. And, in fact, First Enoch attests to this happening:<br />

In respect to <strong>the</strong>ir days, <strong>the</strong> sinners <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong> winter are cut short. <strong>The</strong>ir<br />

seed(s) shall lag behind in <strong>the</strong>ir l<strong>and</strong>s <strong>and</strong> in <strong>the</strong>ir fertile fields, <strong>and</strong> in all<br />

<strong>the</strong>ir activities upon <strong>the</strong> earth. He will turn <strong>and</strong> appear in <strong>the</strong>ir time, <strong>and</strong><br />

withhold rain; <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong> sky shall st<strong>and</strong> still at that time. <strong>The</strong>n <strong>the</strong> vegetable<br />

shall slacken <strong>and</strong> not grow in its season, <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong> fruit shall not be born in<br />

its (proper) season. <strong>The</strong> moon shall alter its order, <strong>and</strong> will not be seen<br />

according to its (normal) cycles.…Many of <strong>the</strong> chiefs of <strong>the</strong> stars shall<br />

make errors in respect to <strong>the</strong> orders given to <strong>the</strong>m; <strong>the</strong>y shall change <strong>the</strong>ir<br />

courses <strong>and</strong> functions <strong>and</strong> not appear during <strong>the</strong> seasons prescribed for<br />

<strong>the</strong>m.…<strong>The</strong>y (<strong>the</strong> stars) shall err against <strong>the</strong>m (<strong>the</strong> sinners); <strong>and</strong> modify<br />

<strong>the</strong>ir courses. <strong>The</strong>n <strong>the</strong>y (<strong>the</strong> sinners) shall err <strong>and</strong> take <strong>the</strong>m (<strong>the</strong> stars) to<br />

be gods. And evil things shall be multiplied upon <strong>the</strong>m; <strong>and</strong> plagues shall<br />

come upon <strong>the</strong>m, so as to destroy all (1 En. 80:2–8).<br />

(<strong>The</strong>n) <strong>the</strong> angel said (to me), “This place is <strong>the</strong> (ultimate) end of heaven<br />

<strong>and</strong> earth: it is <strong>the</strong> prison house for <strong>the</strong> stars <strong>and</strong> powers of heaven. And<br />

<strong>the</strong> stars…<strong>the</strong>y are <strong>the</strong> ones which have transgressed <strong>the</strong> comm<strong>and</strong>ments<br />

of God from <strong>the</strong> beginning of <strong>the</strong>ir rising because <strong>the</strong>y did not arrive punctually.<br />

And he was wroth with <strong>the</strong>m <strong>and</strong> bound <strong>the</strong>m until <strong>the</strong> time of <strong>the</strong><br />

completion of <strong>the</strong>ir sin in <strong>the</strong> year of mystery” (1 En. 18:14–16).<br />

<strong>The</strong> explanation for <strong>the</strong>se cosmic disturbances was <strong>the</strong>ological: <strong>the</strong>y will<br />

occur “in <strong>the</strong> days of <strong>the</strong> sinners” (1 En. 80:2; 18:14–16). Beckwith<br />

rightly concludes, “<strong>the</strong> fault was not with <strong>the</strong> revealed calendar but with<br />

<strong>the</strong> course of nature! <strong>The</strong> calendar could <strong>and</strong> should continue to be<br />

observed, though nature, during this evil period, had gone astray.” 24<br />

Beckwith’s analysis, however, underst<strong>and</strong>s <strong>the</strong> 364-day calendar as<br />

<strong>the</strong> innovation of a minority group in Israel, <strong>the</strong> “proto-Essene movement”<br />

24. Beckwith, Calendar <strong>and</strong> Chronology, Jewish <strong>and</strong> Christian, 140. Beckwith rightly<br />

observes that “[s]ince this material occurs in such early texts, one must presume that<br />

<strong>the</strong> discrepancy had developed fairly rapidly, <strong>and</strong> was due to an absence of intercalation,<br />

ra<strong>the</strong>r than to an imperfect attempt at it” (ibid., 139).
