continues by asserting that even God is in <strong>the</strong>ir midst:<br />

<strong>The</strong> imagery of God’s presence on <strong>the</strong> side of Israel in <strong>the</strong> war draws<br />

from biblical traditions. This influence is explicit in 1QM 10.1–5 which<br />

quotes Deut 20:2–4 (cf. Deut 7:21, 23:10–15; Exod 23:20–33):<br />

And thus he made known to us that you (are) in our midst, O great <strong>and</strong><br />

fearful God ()rwnw lwdg l) wnbrqb ht) )yk), to plunder all our enemies<br />

be[fore u]s. And he taught us concerning our generations, saying,<br />

“When you draw near to war, <strong>the</strong> priest shall st<strong>and</strong> <strong>and</strong> say to <strong>the</strong> people,<br />

<strong>The</strong> language is personalized in ano<strong>the</strong>r version of <strong>the</strong> War Scroll 142 in<br />

which <strong>the</strong> subject speaks in <strong>the</strong> first person singular:<br />
