a!rtov) eschewed in <strong>the</strong> Cologne Mani Codex (87.16–23), <strong>the</strong> “bread of<br />

strangling” (a!rtov a)gxo&nov) <strong>and</strong> “cup of deceit” (poth&rion e )ne/drav)<br />

depreciated in Joseph <strong>and</strong> Aseneth, <strong>the</strong> “bread of idolaters” (Nhl# tph [i.e.,<br />

Mylwlg ydbw( l# tp]) banned in m. (Abod. Zar. 2.6, <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong> “bread of<br />

hea<strong>the</strong>ns” (Ntyp [i.e., Mybkwk ydbw( l# tp]) <strong>and</strong> “wine of hea<strong>the</strong>ns”<br />

(Nnyy [i.e., Mybkwk ydbw( l# Nyy]) forbidden in <strong>the</strong> Eighteen Decrees (b.<br />

(Abod. Zar. 35b–36b). All represent a concern to maintain distinctively<br />

Jewish mores in those areas deemed most vulnerable to pagan corruption. 82<br />

Of special significance for our study is <strong>the</strong> fact that several Jewish<br />

sources that express scruples about oil mention it not just alone, but<br />

toge<strong>the</strong>r with bread <strong>and</strong>/or wine, or <strong>the</strong>ir near equivalents, in combinations<br />

which are similar to that in Joseph <strong>and</strong> Aseneth <strong>and</strong> which function to<br />

set <strong>the</strong> pure apart from <strong>the</strong> impure, <strong>the</strong> holy from <strong>the</strong> profane, <strong>and</strong> especially<br />

Judaism from paganism. <strong>The</strong> book of Judith lists <strong>the</strong> provisions<br />

that Judith took with her into <strong>the</strong> pagan army camp as follows: a skin of<br />

wine, a cruse of oil, <strong>and</strong> a bag filled with parched grain, dried fig cakes,<br />

<strong>and</strong> pure (kaqaro&v) bread (Jdt 10:5). <strong>The</strong> book of Jubilees singles out<br />

grain, wine, <strong>and</strong> olive oil as subjects of <strong>the</strong> heavenly tablets’ most stringent<br />

requirements for tithing <strong>and</strong> purity (Jub. 32:10–15). <strong>The</strong> Qumran<br />

Temple Scroll gives <strong>the</strong> following regulations for <strong>the</strong> holy city <strong>and</strong> its ideal<br />

sanctuary:<br />

Everything that is in it shall be pure, <strong>and</strong> everything that enters it shall be<br />

pure: wine <strong>and</strong> oil <strong>and</strong> all food <strong>and</strong> all drink shall be pure.…In <strong>the</strong> skins (of <strong>the</strong><br />

animals) which <strong>the</strong>y slaughter in <strong>the</strong> sanctuary, in <strong>the</strong>se <strong>the</strong>y shall bring <strong>the</strong>ir<br />

wine <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong>ir oil <strong>and</strong> all <strong>the</strong>ir food to <strong>the</strong> city of my sanctuary. And <strong>the</strong>y shall<br />

not defile my sanctuary with <strong>the</strong> skins of <strong>the</strong> abominable sacrifices which<br />

<strong>the</strong>y offer in <strong>the</strong>ir l<strong>and</strong>. (11Q19 [= 11QTemple a ] 47.5–14; emphasis added)<br />

Whe<strong>the</strong>r oil is for anointing or dietary use in <strong>the</strong>se contexts is a secondary<br />

issue. What is important for our purposes is that <strong>the</strong>se <strong>and</strong> o<strong>the</strong>r texts, representing<br />

a very broad spectrum of Jewish communities, mention oil<br />

toge<strong>the</strong>r with food <strong>and</strong> drink as those basic necessities most subject to defilement<br />

<strong>and</strong>, by <strong>the</strong> same token, if used properly, most symbolic of appropriate<br />

Jewish conduct. On <strong>the</strong> same trajectory, rabbinic law often treats oil <strong>and</strong><br />
