GENERAL NOTES AND FAUNAE.<br />

Dr. GPNTHER puts <strong>the</strong> total number of fishes known at present<br />

as about 9000, and states that <strong>the</strong> collection of <strong>the</strong> British<br />

Museum conta<strong>in</strong>s at <strong>the</strong> present time altoge<strong>the</strong>r 5177 species,<br />

represented by 29,275 examples. Fish. viii. Preface.<br />

Belgium. " Les Poissons des C6tes de Belgique, leurs parasites<br />

et leurs commensaux/' par P. J. VAN BENEDEN. Mem.<br />

Ac. Belg. xxxviii. 1870, pp. 100, with 8 plates, represent<strong>in</strong>g<br />

chiefly parasites and commensals. This memoir conta<strong>in</strong>s a list<br />

of <strong>the</strong> mar<strong>in</strong>e fishes of Belgium, with notes on <strong>the</strong>ir occurrence<br />

and food. The parasites and commensals are enumerated with<br />

each species.<br />

Germany and Switzerland. " Die Fische Deutschlands und<br />

der Schweiz/' von J. C. WEBER. Zweite Auflage. Mi<strong>in</strong>chen,<br />

1870,16mo, pp. 61, with 67 coloured plates. This little work is<br />

very useful to travellers <strong>in</strong> Germany and Switzerland, as it<br />

enables <strong>the</strong>m to identify with <strong>the</strong> greatest possible ease <strong>the</strong><br />

various k<strong>in</strong>ds of fishes of those countries. Although <strong>the</strong> figures<br />

are of small size, most of <strong>the</strong>m are accurate. The text has no<br />

scientific claim, and mentions chiefly <strong>the</strong> locality, food, and size<br />

of <strong>the</strong> several species.<br />

Venice. Dr. A. NINNI gives a list of 258 species of fishes<br />

<strong>in</strong>habit<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> lagunes and bay of Venice; he adds notes on<br />

<strong>the</strong>ir vernacular names, occurrence, and economic value. Ann.<br />

Soc. Nat. Modena, v. 1870, pp. 63-88.<br />

Mediterranean. A. CARUCCIO has given a list of 135 fishes<br />

collected <strong>in</strong> fresh waters and on <strong>the</strong> coasts of Sard<strong>in</strong>ia and Sicily.<br />
