3. Africa.<br />

Eastern Africa. Some shells collected by <strong>the</strong> botanical traveller, Georg<br />

Schwe<strong>in</strong>fiu'th, on <strong>the</strong> banks of <strong>the</strong> Bahr-el-ghazal and its confluents about<br />

7-8rr° X. lat., system of <strong>the</strong> White Nile, axe enumerated by <strong>the</strong> Recorder,<br />

Mal. Bl. xvii. pp. 32-36; among <strong>the</strong>m is a new Planorbis of a ra<strong>the</strong>r American<br />

aspect.<br />

Abyss<strong>in</strong>ia. Twenty species of land and 10 of freshwater<br />

shells found dur<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> British expedition (1867-68) <strong>in</strong> Abyss<strong>in</strong>ia<br />

are enumerated by W T. Blanford <strong>in</strong> Obs. on Abyss.<br />

pp. 173-477, some of <strong>the</strong>m new, but <strong>the</strong>se nei<strong>the</strong>r named nor<br />

sufficiently described. The more remarkable are :—a Helix allied<br />

to subrostrata and pisana, from <strong>the</strong> limestone tract north of<br />

Antalo, which is said to occur also <strong>in</strong> Persia; Bulimus olivieri,<br />

Pfr., <strong>the</strong> f<strong>in</strong>est and commonest land-shell of Abyss<strong>in</strong>ia; an Ennea,<br />

sp. n.; Pupa ccenopicta, Hutt., common to <strong>the</strong> East Indies and<br />

Senegal; <strong>the</strong> European Ancylus fluviatilis, Miill.; <strong>the</strong> widely<br />

spread Melania tuberculata (Miill.) : some species are common<br />

to Natal. The localities and elevations above <strong>the</strong> sea-level are<br />

carefully given. Pupa <strong>in</strong>sularis, Ehrenb., and Bulimus labiosus<br />

(Miill.), var., arc mentioned as <strong>in</strong>habitants of Aden.<br />

These results arc compared with what was o<strong>the</strong>rwise known<br />

concern<strong>in</strong>g Abyss<strong>in</strong>ian shells, <strong>in</strong> a double list conta<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g about<br />

•19 species, by <strong>the</strong> Recorder <strong>in</strong> Mal. Bl. xvii. pp. 82-86.<br />

Bourbon. The h<strong>in</strong>d-shells of this island are reviewed, from his<br />

own observations, by (i. NEVILL, J. A. S.B. xxxix. pp. 401-116.<br />

lie enumerates 11 species: 17 belong<strong>in</strong>g to Helix or Nunhiu, 8 to<br />

Cihhuliita or Eitnt'a,(\ to <strong>the</strong> opcrculated land-shells, among which<br />

1 of (Jmpliulotropis. Several species established by Deshaycs<br />

<strong>in</strong> Maillard's l/'ilc Reunion- arc reduced to varieties, and <strong>the</strong><br />

occurrence of o<strong>the</strong>rs doubted. Enneahicolor (Hutt.) and Achat<strong>in</strong>a<br />

pun<strong>the</strong>ra (fer.) are supposed to have been <strong>in</strong>troduced by<br />

<strong>the</strong> agency of man. Several species arc common to Mauritius.<br />
