The author considers that a genus consists of but one species<br />

necessarily, viz. its type ; and is <strong>the</strong>refore not def<strong>in</strong>ed by variable<br />

characters, but by knowledge of type species ; hence, that genera<br />

proposed <strong>in</strong> catalogues on previously described spp. are entitled<br />

to priority. He po<strong>in</strong>ts out many errors <strong>in</strong> dates. The present<br />

portions conclude with <strong>the</strong> genera of Dejean and his contemporaries,<br />

and <strong>the</strong> author hopes <strong>in</strong> a third part to carry <strong>the</strong> work<br />

down to <strong>the</strong> commencement of <strong>the</strong> ' Berichte J <strong>in</strong> 1836.<br />

The first part of Crotch's paper is translated <strong>in</strong>to German by<br />

v. Harold, and appears <strong>in</strong> C. H. vi. pp. 70-83.<br />
