shells is wrong, as it is not formed by cells, and proposes <strong>the</strong> term cuticula<br />

Roffiaen has unsuccessfully tried to produce artificially scalaroid varieties<br />

by apply<strong>in</strong>g gypsum to <strong>the</strong> aperture of liv<strong>in</strong>g species of Helix dur<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong>ir<br />

Subscalaroid specimens of Clausilia nigricans are noticed by E. v. d. Broeck,<br />

Lanistes ovum, Peters, with a pale yellow band, beg<strong>in</strong>n<strong>in</strong>g at <strong>the</strong> trace* of a<br />

former fracture, and becom<strong>in</strong>g more and more <strong>in</strong>dist<strong>in</strong>ct <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> progress of<br />

Nassa reticulata, Natica monilifera and nitida are sometimes irregularly<br />

prolonged at <strong>the</strong>ir aperture by a colony of Hydract<strong>in</strong>ice occupy<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong>ir surface,<br />

while <strong>the</strong>ir cavity is tenanted by Pagurus bernhardus. Colbeau, Ann.<br />
