KOCH (I.e.) analyzes <strong>the</strong> geographical distribution of <strong>the</strong><br />

Lepidoptera at length.<br />

He remarks on <strong>the</strong> difficulty of obta<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g reliable <strong>in</strong>formation,<br />

and <strong>the</strong>n passes on to consider <strong>the</strong> five great zones of distribution<br />

which he recognizes as dist<strong>in</strong>ct, as follows :—<br />

1. The European or Western fauna (nearly correspond<strong>in</strong>g to<br />

Sclater's Palaearctic Region), dist<strong>in</strong>guished by <strong>the</strong> genera Argynnis,<br />

Melitma, Thais, Lyceena, Satyrus, Erebia, Zygeena, and<br />

<strong>the</strong> Noctuce generally. Lepidoptera occur at all elevations (to<br />

9000 feet <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> Swiss Alps, and to 18,000 feet <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> Andes).<br />

\ anous North-American Sph<strong>in</strong>ges and Noctua; have occurred<br />

<strong>in</strong> Brita<strong>in</strong>, which Koch supposes to have crossed <strong>the</strong> Atlantic<br />
