Serranus. Dr. Bleeker's 22nd part of <strong>the</strong> ' Atlas Ichthyologique,' which<br />

conta<strong>in</strong>s figures of <strong>the</strong> East-Indian species, has been noticed above, p. 82.<br />

Dr. Klunz<strong>in</strong>ger describes <strong>the</strong> species found <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> Red Sea; he has also<br />

exam<strong>in</strong>ed <strong>the</strong>ir synonymy. He dist<strong>in</strong>guishes as a dist<strong>in</strong>ct genus (Pseudoserranus)<br />

species with lateral can<strong>in</strong>e teeth <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> lower jaw, as S. louti, cabri/la,<br />

&c. Verh. z.-b. Ges. Wien, 1870, pp. 674-689.<br />

Serranus vavius, Serranus coavtadci, and Serranus qu<strong>in</strong>quefasciatus are described<br />

as new Central-American species by Bocourt, Ann. Sc. Nat. 1870<br />

(1869), pp. 222, 223. Sei-ranus acanthopho?-us (described as ano<strong>the</strong>r newspecies,<br />

ibid.) is, accord<strong>in</strong>g to a MS. note of <strong>the</strong> author, =S. maculatofasciatus<br />

(Ste<strong>in</strong>d.).<br />

<strong>the</strong> follow<strong>in</strong>g species from Senegambia :—P. jubel<strong>in</strong>i, p. 675, taf. 2; P.<br />

pevotcti, p. 07*, taf. 3 ; P. vogeri, p. 680, taf. 4 ; P. suillum=rangii, p. 682,<br />

taf. 5. He refers also Lavi<strong>in</strong>us auvitus to this genus.<br />

Diaijvaiiiiiia. Dr. Klunz<strong>in</strong>ger describes <strong>the</strong> species <strong>in</strong>habit<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> Red<br />

Sen, which he reduces <strong>in</strong> number; he regards as new Diagvamma mrdidum<br />

and umbv<strong>in</strong>um. Verh. z.-b. Ges. Wien, 1870, pp. 734-738.<br />

Dentes, Dr. Klunz<strong>in</strong>ger (7. c. pp. 702-705) subdivides this genus <strong>in</strong>to :—<br />

1. Dentcx (D. vulgaris); 2. Polysteganus (subg. n., Polysteganus cceruleopu/ictatus,<br />

sp. n., p. 7(i.'i, und Dentcx nvfav = Dentcx variabilis); 3. Gymnocranius<br />

(subg. n., D. rivulatus).<br />
