SHARP (Ent. M. M. vi. p. 253 et seq.) briefly recharacterizes Hydrobius<br />

and its allies <strong>in</strong> Brita<strong>in</strong>, viz. Helochares, Muls., Philhydrus, Sol, Enochrus,<br />

Paracymus, and Anaceena, Thorns. He po<strong>in</strong>ts out that three species are<br />

confused under A. globulus (Payk.), viz. <strong>the</strong> type, a new sp., and A. bipustulata<br />

(Steph.) ; and gives illustrations of certa<strong>in</strong> of <strong>the</strong> oral organs of Hydr.<br />

fuscipes, Hel. lividus, Phil, melanocephalus, En. bicolor, Par. ceneus, and Anglobulus.<br />

v. KIESENWETTER (B. E, Z. xiv. Beih. p. 68) remarks upon Hydrobius<br />

politus, Kiist., be<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong>termediate between Hydrobius and Philhydrus. v.<br />

HEYDEN (ib.) corrects an error <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> description of <strong>the</strong> same species.<br />

RYE (Ent. M. M. vi. p. 36) refers to <strong>the</strong> vars. subrotundus (Steph.) and<br />

ceneus (Sol.,=chalconotus, Leach) of Hydrobius fuscipes (L.) from England.<br />

Philhydrus maritimus, Thorns., occurs <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> Canarian archipelago; P. melanocephalus,<br />

Woll,nee. Ol,=politus, Kiist., of which 3 varieties, doubtfully<br />

suggested as possibly entitled to specific rank, are described from <strong>the</strong> Canaries<br />

: Sharp, Ann. N. H. ser. 4, v. pp. 14 & 15.<br />

Laccobius. Thomson (Skand. Col. x. p. 311 et seq), who has already<br />

created one species, L. nigriceps, at <strong>the</strong> expense of m<strong>in</strong>utus (auct.), now<br />

divides <strong>the</strong> latter <strong>in</strong>to 3 species, viz. bipunctatus, m<strong>in</strong>utus, and alutaceus.<br />

Laccobius nigriceps, Thorns., occurs <strong>in</strong> Andalusia, and may be identical<br />

with L. s<strong>in</strong>uatus, Motsch.; L. alternus, Motsch., occurs <strong>in</strong> Savoy and <strong>the</strong><br />

Pyrenees, and near Geneva; L. paUidus, Muls. & R., has been takeu <strong>in</strong> Andalusia<br />

: v. Kiesenw. I. c. p. 70.
