A very useful paper, giv<strong>in</strong>g, for <strong>the</strong> first time, a full list of all<br />

<strong>the</strong> species of this part of Europe. The authors also enumerate<br />

such contributions to Turkish ornithology as have before appeared,<br />

and add to what was already known on <strong>the</strong> subject some<br />

capital field-notes of <strong>the</strong>ir own.<br />

A useful paper, as hi<strong>the</strong>rto no good general account of <strong>the</strong><br />

birds of this part of Russia existed.<br />

1870, pp. 303-310.<br />

Beyond <strong>the</strong> brief account (Bull. Petersb. iii. p. 343) of Von<br />

Baer's visit <strong>in</strong> 1837, noth<strong>in</strong>g has been known of <strong>the</strong> zoology of<br />

this country. Twenty-eight species are enumerated, of which<br />

four were not fully determ<strong>in</strong>ed. Ten of <strong>the</strong>m are not recorded by<br />

Von Baer, who observed <strong>in</strong> all twenty-four species, six of which<br />

were not noticed by Mr. Gillett.<br />
