MOLLUSCA.<br />

The sea-shells of <strong>the</strong> coast of Granville are enumerated. G. Serva<strong>in</strong>,<br />

Jordan's Catalogue of British Mollusca is a simple list of names, <strong>in</strong>dicat<strong>in</strong>g<br />

<strong>the</strong> varieties, compiled from Jeffreys's' British Conchology,' and pr<strong>in</strong>ted<br />

on one side only for labels.<br />

2. Mediterranean Sea.<br />

II. C. WEINKAUFF has published supplementary notes to his general work<br />

on <strong>the</strong> shells of <strong>the</strong> Mediterranean (see Zool. Rec. iv. pp. 448 & 514). Several<br />

species are added, o<strong>the</strong>rs which had been regarded doubtful are identified<br />

with well-known ones, and some names changed on account of priority.<br />

The draw<strong>in</strong>gs of Adriatic Mollusca (1272 figures, <strong>in</strong>clud<strong>in</strong>g some Annelids,<br />

Cirripeds, and numerous land and freshwater shells) left by STEFANO<br />

CHLEREGHINI, who died at Chioggia near Venice <strong>in</strong> 1820, at <strong>the</strong> Lyceum S.<br />

Catar<strong>in</strong>a <strong>in</strong> Venice, have been determ<strong>in</strong>ed by S. BRUSINA ; and a ra<strong>the</strong>r<br />

verbose account of <strong>the</strong>m is published by <strong>the</strong> latter <strong>in</strong> 280 pages, repeat<strong>in</strong>g<br />

all <strong>the</strong> manuscript names which have been never published before (for example,<br />

Turbo maritimus for Chcmnitzia scalaris, Phil). It is astonish<strong>in</strong>g to<br />

see <strong>the</strong> number of species (249) known to him; and some <strong>in</strong>terest may be<br />

found also <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> accompany<strong>in</strong>g notes of <strong>the</strong> MSS., which state <strong>the</strong> localities,<br />

and have been pr<strong>in</strong>ted word for word by <strong>the</strong> editor. The species which<br />

have not before been ascerta<strong>in</strong>ed to live <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> Adriatic are enumerated<br />

(pp. 34-38) ; two only have been hi<strong>the</strong>rto observed on <strong>the</strong> western and not<br />

on <strong>the</strong> eastern side, <strong>the</strong>y are Corbulomya meditevvunea (Costa) and Litor<strong>in</strong>a<br />

saxatilis (Olivi, not Johnst.).<br />

The muddy grounds at S<strong>in</strong>igaglia have been explored with an improved<br />

dredge by A. Manzoni; <strong>the</strong>se are very poor <strong>in</strong> mollusks, be<strong>in</strong>g devoid of<br />

vegetation; Tavvitdlu, Chenopus [Aporrhais], Phil<strong>in</strong>e, Akera, Dentalium,<br />

Nation yuillcm<strong>in</strong>i, Doris, Tethys, Sepia, and Loligo are <strong>the</strong> only genera which<br />

have been found, most of <strong>the</strong>m very numerous. The author <strong>in</strong>sists that all<br />

must feed on animal matter. Bull. mal. Ital. iii. pp. 11-14.<br />

The mar<strong>in</strong>e mollusks found at Cape P<strong>in</strong>ede, near Marseilles, are enumerated<br />

by F. Ancey, Ann. Mal. pp. 244-257.<br />

The recent mar<strong>in</strong>e shells found at and near Catania are enumerated by A.<br />

Aradas, Att. Soc. Ital. iii. pp. 533-544. The short littoral tract between<br />

Catania and Riposto, and chiefly that of Aci-Trezza, is extraord<strong>in</strong>arily rich<br />

<strong>in</strong> sea-shells, some of <strong>the</strong>m very rare, or not found hi<strong>the</strong>rto elsewhere (for<br />

example, Panopeea glgeij<strong>in</strong>evis) ; <strong>the</strong> sandy shore next Catania, on <strong>the</strong> contrary,<br />

is ra<strong>the</strong>r poor.—The Sicilian species described <strong>in</strong> 1840 and 1H41 as<br />

new by Prof. C. Maravigna, and always regarded as more or loss doubtful,<br />

have been exam<strong>in</strong>ed by L. Benoit and A. Aradas from orig<strong>in</strong>al specimens,<br />

and identified, except one, with well-known ones. Att. Soc. Ital. iii. 1K09,<br />

A large number of shells dredged <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> Mediterranean by Capta<strong>in</strong>s Spratt<br />

and Nares, <strong>in</strong> various depths, some of 100 fathoms and more, are enumerated<br />

by Jell'reys Ann. X. II. (4) vi. pp. 65-80. Besides several new species, <strong>the</strong>y<br />

conta<strong>in</strong> o<strong>the</strong>rs known hi<strong>the</strong>rto only <strong>in</strong> a fossil state—for example, Verticordia<br />

graiii/lata, Astarteparva, &c.
