MAY (Zool. s. s. pp. 1993) cont<strong>in</strong>ues his translation of Van Vollenhoven's<br />

descriptions under <strong>the</strong> title " Life-histories of Saw-flies." Emphytus c<strong>in</strong>ctus<br />

(h.) is <strong>the</strong> only species treated of <strong>in</strong> 1870 <strong>in</strong> this publication.<br />

GIRAUD (Ann. Soc. Ent. Fr. 4 e stir. x. pp. 27-30) gives short characters<br />

for Janus (Steph.), and an account of <strong>the</strong> economy of J. femoratus, Curt,<br />

and its allies. He has bred that sp. from swell<strong>in</strong>gs <strong>in</strong> lower branches of<br />

young trees of Quercus pedunculatus at Fonta<strong>in</strong>ebleau and V<strong>in</strong>cennes, and<br />

notes that its parasite is Ephialtes <strong>in</strong>anis (Gr.). Ephippionotus luteiventris,<br />

Costa, cf = Cephus compressus (F.), which is also a Janus, and attacks<br />

pear-trees; whereas <strong>the</strong> o<strong>the</strong>r two spp. of Cephus (pygmceus, L, and arund<strong>in</strong>is,<br />

Gir.) live <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> stems of Gram<strong>in</strong>acece. The author considers this<br />

difference of habit to substantiate <strong>the</strong> generic differences.<br />
