shell pi. 2. fig. 1), M<strong>in</strong>danao, lives on <strong>the</strong> ground; a variety, or perhaps dist<strong>in</strong>ct<br />

species, p. 62. X. dist<strong>in</strong>cta (Pfr.), Coch<strong>in</strong>ch<strong>in</strong>a and M<strong>in</strong>danao [is also<br />

abundant <strong>in</strong> Siam], citr<strong>in</strong>a (L.), Moluccas. The genital apparatus, jaw, and<br />

dentition described and figured pi. 3. figs. 13 & 14, pi. 6. figs. 27 & 30, and<br />

pi. 7. fig. 12. The follow<strong>in</strong>g species, known from <strong>the</strong> shell only, probably<br />

belong also to this section: nobilis, Pfr., and obliquata, Reeve, both from<br />

Zamboanga, M<strong>in</strong>danao, borneensis, Pfr., schumacheriana, Pfr., donovani, Pfr.,<br />

and souleyetiana, Pfr., from Borneo.<br />

c. Shell-lobes rudimentary or want<strong>in</strong>g, left cervical lobe not divided.<br />

X. bistrialis, Beck, ligulata, Fer., tranquebarica, Fabr., belangeri, Desh., and<br />

maderaspatana, Gray, all from S. India; <strong>the</strong> sexual apparatus, jaw, and dentition<br />

of <strong>the</strong>m described and figured pi 3. figs. 15, 16 & 26, pi 5. fig. 4,<br />

pi 6. figs. 25 & 29, pi. 7. figs. 9-11. Semper, I. c. pp. 45-66.—The liv<strong>in</strong>g<br />

animal of Nan<strong>in</strong>a ligulata (Fer.) is also described and figured by A. Craven,<br />

Ann. mal. Belg. vol. iv. 1869, p. 93, pi. 3. Accord<strong>in</strong>g to this figure <strong>the</strong><br />

h<strong>in</strong>der end of <strong>the</strong> foot is broad and flat, as <strong>the</strong> Recorder has observed it <strong>in</strong><br />

N. (Rhysota) ovum, Val, and different from <strong>the</strong> elevated truncated extremity<br />

of N citr<strong>in</strong>a Ch.).<br />

Ariophanta, Desmoul<strong>in</strong>s. C. SEMPER characterizes this genus<br />

<strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> follow<strong>in</strong>g manner :—Both shell-lobes of <strong>the</strong> mantle<br />

present <strong>in</strong> most species; a female appendicular gland, composed<br />

of s<strong>in</strong>gle lobuli, and connected with a calcareous sagitta; no<br />

appendicular glands on <strong>the</strong> male sexual organ. This genus is<br />

represented by <strong>the</strong> follow<strong>in</strong>g species:—rumphii, v. d. Busch,<br />

Java; mart<strong>in</strong>i, Pfr., Sumatra; nemorensis, Miill., Celebes; rareguttata,<br />

Mouss., Adenare; striata, Gray, S<strong>in</strong>gapore; and atrofusca,<br />

Albers, S<strong>in</strong>gapore [and Borneo]. Genital apparatus,<br />

sagitta, jaw, and dentition of some of <strong>the</strong> species described and<br />

figured pi. 3. figs. 17-20, pi. 5. figs. 14 and 24, pi. 6. fig. 31,<br />

pi. 7. figs. 5-8. No species known from <strong>the</strong> Philipp<strong>in</strong>es. Semper,<br />

Rhysota, Albers; also elevated to <strong>the</strong> rank of a genus by C. Semper.<br />

Shell-lobes quite absent; left cervical lobe divided <strong>in</strong>to two parts. Sexual<br />

apparatus simple, without appendicular glands. All known species belong to<br />

<strong>the</strong> Philipp<strong>in</strong>es, and can be arranged accord<strong>in</strong>g to <strong>the</strong> sculpture of <strong>the</strong> shell.<br />

a. Shell wr<strong>in</strong>kled. R. ovum, Val, Luzon; maxima, Pfr., E. and N. M<strong>in</strong>danao<br />

; porphyria, Pfr., Burias Island; and dvitija, 0. Semper, Luzon. The<br />

sexual apparatus, jaw, and dentition of <strong>the</strong>se four species described and<br />

figured pi 4. figs. 1, 6 & 8, pi. 5. fig. 22, pi 7. figs. 15 & 16. A new species<br />

belong<strong>in</strong>g to this section, but known only from <strong>the</strong> shell, is R. antonii,<br />

sp. n., Semper, I. c. p. 72, pi 2. f. 2, Luzon.<br />

b. Shell decussated. R. bulla, Pfr., Luzon; semiglobosa, Pfr., Sou<strong>the</strong>rn<br />

Luzon, Bohol, Leyte, Samar, M<strong>in</strong>danao, and Basilan; <strong>the</strong> shell varies much,<br />
