The first part, pp. 1-56, conta<strong>in</strong>s accounts of various journeys<br />

by v. Heyden <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> above-mentioned parts of Spa<strong>in</strong> and Portugal,<br />

with notes of <strong>the</strong> exact localities of <strong>the</strong> <strong>in</strong>sects observed.<br />

These are almost entirely Coleoptera, though some few names of<br />

Hemiptera, Hymenoptera, and Diptera are mentioned; <strong>the</strong> Hemiptera<br />

are to be described hereafter by Kirschbaum. The<br />

second part, pp. 57 (75 <strong>in</strong> error) -176, conta<strong>in</strong>s descriptions of<br />

new species, 141 <strong>in</strong> number, found <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong>se journeys by v.<br />

Heyden and o<strong>the</strong>rs : <strong>the</strong> descriptions are by v. Heyden, Dieck,<br />

v. Kiesenwetter, Scriba, Kraatz, de Saulcy, v. Harold, Desbr.<br />

des Loges, Haag, Seidlitz, Allard, Ch. Brisout, andKirsch (some<br />

of those described by Dieck and Seidlitz are also referred to by<br />

those authors <strong>in</strong> o<strong>the</strong>r papers of <strong>the</strong> same publication for 1870).<br />

Three new genera are characterized, by v. Heyden, Kraatz and<br />

Dieck, and ano<strong>the</strong>r is <strong>in</strong>dicated by de Saulcy; and various observations<br />

are made upon species already recorded from <strong>the</strong> above<br />

localities. Two new species of Choleva are also described (<strong>in</strong> a<br />

note) by Kraatz, from Greece. At <strong>the</strong> end of <strong>the</strong> same Beiheft,<br />

pp. 211, 212, are descriptions by Loew of 5 new species of Diptera<br />

(gen. Oxycera, Opsebius, Heteropogon, Holopogon, and Stenopogon),<br />

which, from <strong>the</strong>ir localities, <strong>the</strong>ir capture by v. Heyden, and<br />

<strong>the</strong> quotation of Loew's name on <strong>the</strong> title of v. Heyden's paper,<br />

would seem to have been <strong>in</strong>tended to be <strong>in</strong>cluded <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> latter.<br />

The plate (ii.) conta<strong>in</strong>s outl<strong>in</strong>e figures of 7 of <strong>the</strong> most prom<strong>in</strong>ent<br />

of <strong>the</strong> species described, with some details.<br />

HEYDEN, LUCAS VON. Revision der europaischen Hymenoplia-<br />

Arten. L. c. pp. 177-183.<br />

The author reduces <strong>the</strong> European species of Hymenoplia to<br />

8 (without reckon<strong>in</strong>g two of Blanchard's species, unknown to<br />

him), of which he describes 3 as new.<br />

1869-70, pp. 44-47.<br />

Treats of <strong>the</strong> distribution of cave-beetles and of eyeless<br />

beetles not liv<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> caves. All genera conta<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g such <strong>in</strong>sects<br />

are enumerated, with <strong>the</strong> number of <strong>the</strong>ir species, and general<br />

observations as to localities and habits.<br />
