placed on all sides of <strong>the</strong> branchlets and on <strong>the</strong> <strong>in</strong>ternal surface of <strong>the</strong><br />

branches, Axis cont<strong>in</strong>uous, horny, black. British Museum. Locality not<br />

given.<br />

Menella <strong>in</strong>dica, gen. et sp. nov., Gray (I. c. p. 407). Coral cyl<strong>in</strong>drical, end<br />

(of <strong>the</strong> branches ?) clavate, rounded, surface spiculose. Polype-cells on all<br />

sides of <strong>the</strong> cyl<strong>in</strong>drical stem (and branches), close toge<strong>the</strong>r, form<strong>in</strong>g a rough<br />

spiculose surface with hexagonal areolae. Polypes retractile: when retracted,<br />

convex, with an oblong concavity, surrounded with spicides. Axis horny,<br />

black. Hab. Bombay.<br />

Lignella, gen. nov., Gray (I.e. p. 407). L. richardi= Gorgonia richardi,<br />

Lamx.<br />

Leucoella cervicomis, gen. et sp, nov., Gray (I. e. p. 407). Coral branched,<br />

fan-like, <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> same plane, compressed; branches furcate, upper side convex<br />

or angular, lower side concave, smooth, barren, with a more or less wide central<br />

groove. Bark th<strong>in</strong> and smooth. Polype-cells large and spherical, scattered<br />

or <strong>in</strong> l<strong>in</strong>es on <strong>the</strong> upper surface and marg<strong>in</strong> of <strong>the</strong> stem and branches.<br />

Axis white, wood-like, soft, with fusiform warty spicules, which are generally<br />

slender and elongate, but some are thicker and more ventricose. Brit. Mus,<br />

Loc. unknown.<br />

Bhipidella verticillata, Solander. This, <strong>the</strong> Gorgonia verticillata, Esper,<br />

Rhipidogorgia verticillata, M.-Edw. & Haime, and Suberigorgia verticillata,<br />

Koll., should be restored as a dist<strong>in</strong>ct generic type (Gray, loc. cit. p. 407).<br />

Vioa asbest<strong>in</strong>a, Nardo. In like manner, Dr. Gray (loc. cit. p. 408) re-establishes<br />

Nardo's generic term for this coral (=Lobularia asbest<strong>in</strong>a, Ehr., Briareum<br />

asbest<strong>in</strong>um, Verrill, and B. suberosum (pars), Koll).<br />

From conclusions arrived at after careful exam<strong>in</strong>ation of <strong>the</strong> calcareous<br />

spicula <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> sections Pvimnoacea, Gorgoniacea, and Gorgoniellacece of <strong>the</strong><br />

subfamily Gorgoni<strong>in</strong>ae and family Gorgoniidae, Mr. W. S. Kent (M. Micr. J.<br />

Feb. 1870, pp. 76-94), proposes <strong>the</strong> follow<strong>in</strong>g alterations <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> nomenclature<br />

of certa<strong>in</strong> species:—To Muvicea should be referred Gorgoniaplantag<strong>in</strong>ea, Lmk.<br />

(Eunicea plantag<strong>in</strong>ea, M.-Edw.) ; to Ech<strong>in</strong>ogorgia, K8U., Rhipidogorgia coavctata,<br />

M.-Edw., Muriceafungifera, M.-Edw., and Gorgoniagranifera, Lmk.;<br />

to Eunicea, Plexaura pensilis, Val, and P. pendula, Val.; to Plexaurella, Gorgonia<br />

heteropora,hmk.; to Gorgonia, Muriceaplacomus,Val. & M.-Edw. (non<br />

Esp.), Plexaura racemosa, Yal., Verrueella fareata, M.-Edw.; to Leptogorgia,<br />

Gorgonia m<strong>in</strong>iata, pnmicea, and ramulus, M.-Edw. Spicules of <strong>the</strong> Leptogorgian<br />

type ocour <strong>in</strong> various modifications <strong>in</strong> each of <strong>the</strong> follow<strong>in</strong>g genera<br />

of Milne-Edwards:—Lophogorgia, Pterogorgia, Xiphigorgia, Rhipidogorgia,<br />

Phyllogorgia, Hymenogorgia, Phycoyorgia, and Gorgonella. Verrucella violacea<br />

should probably be made <strong>the</strong> type of a new genus, hav<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong>corporated with<br />

it Gorgonia lilae-<strong>in</strong>a and sangu<strong>in</strong>olenta, Val. To Juncella should be referred<br />

Cteuocella pect<strong>in</strong>ata, Primnoa myura, Leptogorgia boryana, Rhipidogorgia<br />

laeuens, plagalh, umbraculum, Pterogorgia betul<strong>in</strong>a, Verrucellafiexuosa.<br />

The follow<strong>in</strong>g new species are described by Verrill, Tr. Conn. Acad i.<br />

p. 551-558 :—<br />
