OXYGNATHA (ZONITID^E).<br />

The classification of <strong>the</strong> first family of Pulmonata proposed by<br />

C. SEMPER is <strong>the</strong> follow<strong>in</strong>g :—<br />

Family Zonitidee. A mucous pore at <strong>the</strong> h<strong>in</strong>der end of <strong>the</strong><br />

foot. Jaw smooth, without ribs. Lateral teeth of <strong>the</strong> radula<br />

subulate or bicuspidate.<br />

Subfamily 1. Ceratophora. A horn-like prom<strong>in</strong>ence above<br />

<strong>the</strong> mucous pore; under surface of <strong>the</strong> foot longitud<strong>in</strong>ally divided<br />

<strong>in</strong>to three parts.<br />

Tennentia, Parmarion, Euplccta, n. g., Macrochlamys, Dendrolimax (Dohrn),<br />

Helicarion, Eurypus, n. g., Rotula (Albers), Martensia, n. g., Microcystis, Macroceros,<br />

n. g. [Here should be <strong>in</strong>serted <strong>the</strong> American genus Stenopus or<br />

Guppya.]<br />

Subfamily 2. Aceratophora. No horn-like prom<strong>in</strong>ence above<br />

<strong>the</strong> mucous pore; under surface of <strong>the</strong> foot not divided.<br />

Ariophanta, Xesta, Rhysota (Albers), Zonites.<br />

The anatomy of some Italian species of Limaxhas been studied<br />

by F. SORDELLI, Atti Soc. Ital. xiii. pp. 1-12; his observations<br />

lead him to dist<strong>in</strong>guish <strong>the</strong> subdivisions of this genus <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

follow<strong>in</strong>g manner:—<br />

I. Internal shell <strong>in</strong>equilateral, dorsal keel <strong>in</strong>complete. Sheath of <strong>the</strong> male<br />

organ simple,<br />

«. without flagelliform appendix: Eulimax, Moq.-Tand.<br />

aa. as long as <strong>the</strong> matrix or longer: Limax dorice, dacampi, punctulatus.<br />

bb. not half as long as <strong>the</strong> matrix: L. maximus, psarus, variegatus,<br />

arbor um.<br />

b. with a flagelliform appendix : Agriolimax, Morch, L. agrestis, L., and<br />

filaiis, Hay.<br />

II. Internal shell equilateral. Dorsal keel complete. Sheath of <strong>the</strong> male<br />

composed of two parts. Milax, Gray, L. marg<strong>in</strong>atus, Drap., gagates and<br />

sowerbyi.<br />

Ilevnemann's list of <strong>the</strong> slugs of Europe and adjacent countries enumerates<br />

1* species of Limax, subgen. Heguemar<strong>in</strong>ia,Miilm, two of <strong>the</strong> subgenus<br />

Malacolimax, Malm, seven of <strong>the</strong> subg. Ayriolimax, Malm, one Lehmannia,<br />

Heynem , five Amalia, Moq.-Tand., and one Lallemantia, Baudon, tho last<br />

only from <strong>the</strong> Canary Islands; fur<strong>the</strong>r 28 species, <strong>the</strong> generic place of
