Geographical Distribution.<br />

' Porcup<strong>in</strong>e' Expedition of 1869.—CAHPENTER, JEFFREYS, and WYVILLE<br />

THOMSON record <strong>the</strong> occurrence of <strong>the</strong> follow<strong>in</strong>g species <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> area dredged<br />

(extend<strong>in</strong>g from <strong>the</strong> west of Ireland to Rockall Bank, <strong>the</strong> Faeroes, and<br />

Shetland):—Cidaris papillata, Ech<strong>in</strong>us elegans, Spatangus raschi, Bris<strong>in</strong>ga<br />

endecacnemos, off <strong>the</strong> west of Ireland; PouHalesia miranda, S.E. from<br />

Rockall; Ophiocten kreeyeri, Ophiothrix fragilis, Amphiura balli, Ophiacantha<br />

sp<strong>in</strong>ulosa, off <strong>the</strong> S.W. extremity of Ireland; Asteronyx loveni, N.W. of Hebrides<br />

and <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> M<strong>in</strong>ch. The " cold area " was found to be extraord<strong>in</strong>arily<br />

rich <strong>in</strong> Ech<strong>in</strong>oderms, mostly of a decidedly boreal or even arctic character<br />

(e. g. Antedon eschrichti), while many of <strong>the</strong> sou<strong>the</strong>rn types which presented<br />

<strong>the</strong>mselves were much reduced <strong>in</strong> size.<br />

Various Ech<strong>in</strong>oderms are also recorded by <strong>the</strong> same authors (P. R. Soc.<br />

Dec. 8, 1870) as taken <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> ' Porcup<strong>in</strong>e' Expedition of 1870, off <strong>the</strong><br />

French, Spanish, and Portuguese coasts, and <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> Mediterranean.<br />

METZGER (I. c.) records <strong>the</strong> follow<strong>in</strong>g Ech<strong>in</strong>odermata from <strong>the</strong><br />

East-Frisian coast, <strong>the</strong> <strong>in</strong>vestigation of which, ow<strong>in</strong>g to its topographical<br />

peculiarities, is accompanied with very considerable<br />

difficulties:—<br />

OPHIUROIDEA.<br />

VON MARTENS (Arch. f. Nat. pp. 245-260) gives a list of 63<br />

species from <strong>the</strong> Indian Ocean, from East Africa to <strong>the</strong> Polynesian<br />

Islands. Twenty-four species were found by <strong>the</strong> author<br />

himself <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> Indian archipelago ; and of <strong>the</strong>se <strong>the</strong> follow<strong>in</strong>g<br />

are new:—<br />

Ophiactis maculosa, South Ch<strong>in</strong>ese Sea, between S<strong>in</strong>gapore and Bangkok;<br />

Ophiomyxa brerisp<strong>in</strong>a, Ambo<strong>in</strong>a; Ophiocoma temisp<strong>in</strong>a, Larentuka, Isl.
