The author's view of geographical distribution <strong>in</strong>dicates a somewhat different<br />

orig<strong>in</strong>al arrangement of land and water from that usually accepted.<br />

He considers that all Coleoptera <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> world are referable to one or o<strong>the</strong>r of<br />

three great stirpes, which, <strong>in</strong> his op<strong>in</strong>ion, sprung from one stirps, and have<br />

acquired dist<strong>in</strong>guish<strong>in</strong>g features by long isolation and changes <strong>in</strong> condition of<br />

life. These three stirpes are:—1, <strong>the</strong> Lido-African; 2, <strong>the</strong> Brazilian; and,<br />

8, <strong>the</strong> ' microtypal' (so termed on account of its not conta<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g such large or<br />

conspicuous <strong>in</strong>sects as <strong>the</strong> o<strong>the</strong>rs, and of which <strong>the</strong> English fauna and flora<br />

are stated to be standard types). The Indo-African stirps <strong>in</strong>habits Africa<br />

south of <strong>the</strong> Sahara, India and Ch<strong>in</strong>a south of <strong>the</strong> Himalayas, <strong>the</strong> Malayan<br />

district, <strong>the</strong> Lidian archipelago, and <strong>the</strong> New Gu<strong>in</strong>ea group, and is less modified<br />

by foreign elements than <strong>the</strong> next stirps. The Brazilian stirps <strong>in</strong>habits
