Bombyx mori and Sericiculture.<br />

GUERIN-MENEVILLE publishes (R. Z. 1870, pp. 45-48, 72-80, 214-224)<br />

his usual series of reports on Sericiculture. He records <strong>the</strong> cont<strong>in</strong>ued success<br />

of Baron de Bretton, Madame Baumann, and M. Chazy <strong>in</strong> rear<strong>in</strong>g An<strong>the</strong>raa<br />

yama-mai; publishes a report from <strong>the</strong> French m<strong>in</strong>ister <strong>in</strong> Japan relative to<br />

<strong>the</strong> habits of <strong>the</strong> <strong>in</strong>sect <strong>in</strong> that country, and <strong>the</strong> means adopted to rear it.<br />

(Of <strong>the</strong> eggs sent to France by this gentleman only 20 per cent, were fertile;<br />

and most of <strong>the</strong>se hatched before <strong>the</strong> oaks were <strong>in</strong> leaf.) Guer<strong>in</strong>-Meheville<br />

also records an hermaphrodite specimen of Bombyx mylitta, bred by M. Henzi,<br />

and th<strong>in</strong>ks that <strong>the</strong> epidemic among B. mori is gradually decreas<strong>in</strong>g.<br />

M. Renard has sent eggs of a very strong Ch<strong>in</strong>ese race to France ; <strong>the</strong> silkworms<br />

were reared by different experimenters with vary<strong>in</strong>g success. Guer<strong>in</strong>-<br />

Meneville attributes <strong>the</strong> epidemic to unwholesome food; and, while not<br />

plac<strong>in</strong>g much confidence <strong>in</strong> M. Pasteur's views, recommends that <strong>the</strong> matter<br />

should be fur<strong>the</strong>r <strong>in</strong>vestigated.<br />

DELANDRE (R. Z. 1870, pp. 121-128) reviews <strong>the</strong> various publications on<br />

Sericiculture which have recently appeared'<strong>in</strong> England, Holland, Austria,<br />

Prussia and Sweden. He publishes a letter from O. Zik, giv<strong>in</strong>g details of<br />

recent experiments <strong>in</strong> Austro-Hungary (pp. 153-158), and publishes (pp.<br />

189-192) an account of <strong>the</strong> progress of Sericiculture <strong>in</strong> Coch<strong>in</strong> Ch<strong>in</strong>a and<br />

Cambodia.<br />

A. WALLACE has published (Ent. Ann. 1871, pp. 101-107) some notes on<br />

Sericiculture, chiefly with reference to <strong>the</strong> feasibility of rear<strong>in</strong>g Bombyx<br />

mori <strong>in</strong> England and <strong>the</strong> British colonies. For fur<strong>the</strong>r remarks see Proc.<br />

E. Soc. 1870, pp. 10,11.<br />

A. B. FARN has published an abstract, with useful additional notes, of a<br />

valuable official Report (No. 1) by Mr. Adams, secretary to H.M. Legation<br />

<strong>in</strong> Ch<strong>in</strong>a, on <strong>the</strong> " Central Silk Districts of Japan." Ent. v. pp. 87-91.<br />
