MOLLUSCA.<br />

<strong>the</strong> most frequent; next to <strong>the</strong>m <strong>the</strong> species of Vertigo, Cionella, Helix h ispida,<br />

and Carychium. Species of larger size are very rare.<br />

Bavaria. Dr. WALSER notes <strong>the</strong> occurrence of various species of land<br />

and freshwater shells <strong>in</strong> different parts of Bavaria. Nachr. mal. Ges. ii.<br />

pp. 93-96. Among <strong>the</strong>m may be mentioned Cnio platyvhynchus <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

Chiemsee, a peculiar form aiLimncett <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> Walchensee, and Helix candidula<br />

near Munich.<br />

Bohemia. A few additions to <strong>the</strong> malacological fauna of Carlsbad and<br />

Franzensbmnn (Zool. Ree. ii. p. 220) are given by LEHJIANN, Mal. Bl.<br />

xvii. p. 98; two of <strong>the</strong>m, Pupa substriata and Clausilia cana, are not men­<br />

tioned by Slavik.<br />

Galizia. The land and freshwater shells of this prov<strong>in</strong>ce, hi<strong>the</strong>rto very littlo<br />

known, are enumerated by Dr. J. J.vcnxo (Verb. z.-b. Wien, 1870, pp. 45-<br />

58) ; <strong>the</strong>re are 94 species of land and 45 of freshwater shells. Some of <strong>the</strong>se<br />

belong to <strong>the</strong> Carpathian centre, as Helix austriaca, pietvusl iana, cavjia/ica,<br />

c<strong>in</strong>gulella, faust<strong>in</strong>a, lutesccns. Melanopsis espevi has been found <strong>in</strong> some l'odolian<br />

streams with<strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> prov<strong>in</strong>ce, but only <strong>in</strong> a subfossil state.<br />

Transylvania. E. A. BIELZ has published a list of 69 species, conta<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g<br />

4S land and 21 freshwater shells, found near Klausenburg ; among <strong>the</strong>m are<br />

twelve species peculiar to Transylvania, but not one of <strong>the</strong> so-called Baleoclausilice.<br />

A few more occur <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> vic<strong>in</strong>ity on Jura limestone—for example,<br />

Helix vupestris, faust<strong>in</strong>a, Pupa avenacca, Clausilia biclzi. The paper is written<br />

<strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> Magyar language ; but a nearly complete German extract follows it, <strong>in</strong><br />

which, however, Helix solaria, Menke, no. 14, has been omitted by <strong>in</strong>advertence.<br />

Danube. Thirty-eight species of freshwater shells from <strong>the</strong> mouth of <strong>the</strong><br />

Danube are enumerated by Bourguignat, Ann. Mal. i. pp. 37-70, among which<br />

are no less than i) species of Vivipava, 1 Lithoglyphus, 1 Melania, 4 Melanopsis.<br />

France. Several French conchologists have contributed <strong>the</strong>ir part to a<br />

"Prodrome a l'liistoire malacologique de la France'," viz. J. MADILI.U <strong>the</strong><br />

Limacidee, MASSOT <strong>the</strong> genus TeslaceUa, PENCUINAT <strong>the</strong> genera Pavmuccllu<br />

and Daialcbavdia, and PALADILIIE <strong>the</strong> 1'alud<strong>in</strong>idec. Ann. Mal. pp. 105-214.<br />

The numbers of species <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>in</strong>dividual genera will be mentioned <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

special part.<br />

2. Mediterranean Bas<strong>in</strong>.<br />

Several new species from Sou<strong>the</strong>rn France, Spa<strong>in</strong>, and Algeria described<br />

by BOUKGUIGXATJR. Z. lf-70, pp. U, 87, 160, from Sou<strong>the</strong>rn France also by<br />

ST. SIMON and REYXKS, Ann. Mal. i. pp. 20 and 35.<br />

Some ra<strong>the</strong>r rare species of land-shells found by A. Villa <strong>in</strong> Val della<br />

Crosa, Val Mn»gio, and Val Sabbia, <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> Italian Alps, are mentioned, Bull.<br />

Sou<strong>the</strong>rn Tyrol. E. DE BETTA, who published <strong>in</strong> 1852 a pamphlet concern<strong>in</strong>g<br />

<strong>the</strong> terrestrial niollusks of Val di Non, has given a new list of (be<br />

land and only 8 of freshwater niollusks; <strong>the</strong> latter are Limveca peveip-u<br />
