Rotula *, Albers, elevated to a separate genus by C. Semper. Horn-like<br />

prom<strong>in</strong>ence above <strong>the</strong> mucus-pore short or want<strong>in</strong>g; shell-lobes mostly<br />

absent. No appendicular gland <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> female; a sac with calcareous concretions<br />

on <strong>the</strong> vas deferens, and a caecum on <strong>the</strong> retractor penis. To this genus<br />

belong:—ccelatura, Fer., rufa, Less., massoni, Behn, and campbelli, Gray, all<br />

described hi<strong>the</strong>rto as Helix. The sexual apparatus, jaw, and dentition of<br />

<strong>the</strong>se four species described and figured, pi. 3. figs. 22, 23, 25, & 28, pi 7.<br />

figs. 1, 2, 3 & 17. Probably also Helix rawsonis, Bens., detecta, Fe"r., cernica,<br />

H. Adams, and imperfecta, Desh., belong to this genus, but <strong>the</strong>y are known<br />

only from <strong>the</strong> shell. H philyr<strong>in</strong>a, Morelet, must be reexam<strong>in</strong>ed; its radula<br />

figured pi 6. fig. 35. All <strong>the</strong> above species are from Mauritius or Bourbon<br />

except R. massoni, which lives on <strong>the</strong> Nicobar Islands. Semper, I. c.<br />

<strong>the</strong>ir anatomical character with Zonites, and may enter <strong>in</strong>to <strong>the</strong> same genus;<br />

jaw and radula pi. 5. fig. 21; probably also H. euryomphala, Morelet, fulig<strong>in</strong>osa,<br />

Griffith, <strong>in</strong>ornata, Say, caduca, Pfr., and bil<strong>in</strong>eata, Pfr. But <strong>in</strong> America<br />

<strong>the</strong>re are also Zonitidse with horn-like prom<strong>in</strong>ence above <strong>the</strong> mucus-pore,<br />
