and [Hydrobia] schmidtii (Charp.), Valvata cristata, Miill, Anodonta eellensis<br />

(Gmel), and Pisidium amnicum (Miill.); <strong>the</strong> absence of <strong>the</strong> larger species of<br />

Limncea and Palud<strong>in</strong>a is highly characteristic of <strong>the</strong> mounta<strong>in</strong>ous region.<br />

Among <strong>the</strong> land-shells Central-European species are mixed with o<strong>the</strong>rs peculiar<br />

to <strong>the</strong> sou<strong>the</strong>rn slope of <strong>the</strong> Alps, for example Helix <strong>in</strong>carnata,<br />

fruticum, obvoluta, with c<strong>in</strong>gulata, angigyra, cemula, and o<strong>the</strong>rs. Some errors<br />

<strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> former paper of <strong>the</strong> same author are here corrected.<br />

Verona. E. DE BETTA enumerates 153 species of Mollusca liv<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

Prov<strong>in</strong>ce of Verona, 92 of which are terrestrial, <strong>the</strong> rest freshwater. Many<br />

of <strong>the</strong>se are real novelties for this fauna, as:— Vitr<strong>in</strong>a brevis (Fer.), on <strong>the</strong><br />

Montebaldo; Zonites hyal<strong>in</strong>us (Fer.), hydat<strong>in</strong>us (Rossm.), Helix lurida,<br />

Ziegl, cemula, Rossm., Bithynia ventricosa, Gray, &c. The genera and subgenera<br />

are carefully characterized and critical remarks appended to <strong>the</strong> species.<br />

The existence otMelania holandri (Fer.) with<strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> prov<strong>in</strong>ce has not received<br />

confirmation, and it is probably to be cancelled.<br />

Venice. E. DE BETTA comprises 138 land, 70 freshwater, and 6 submar<strong>in</strong>e<br />

species, viz. two Auriculidee and four Hydrobice, which he wrongly calls<br />

Bithynia. As <strong>the</strong> prov<strong>in</strong>ce extends from <strong>the</strong> Alps to <strong>the</strong> sea, we f<strong>in</strong>d<br />

among <strong>the</strong>m species which are peculiar to <strong>the</strong> mounta<strong>in</strong>s, and especially to<br />

those of Friul and part of Carniolia, as Helix <strong>in</strong>termedia, Fer., cemula,<br />

Rossm., phalerata, Ziegl, lurida, Ziegl, leucozona, Ziegl., ClausUia costata,<br />

Ziegl, c<strong>in</strong>cta (Brumati) ; o<strong>the</strong>rs more peculiar to Lombardy, as H angigyra<br />

(Jan), TJnio bonelli (Fer.); and some characteristic of <strong>the</strong> seashore, as Helix<br />

pisana, Miill, trochoides, Poir., &c. The genus Clausilia is represented<br />

by 22 species, Pupa, <strong>in</strong>clud<strong>in</strong>g Vertigo, by 15, Nerit<strong>in</strong>a by 9 species. 1st.<br />

Thirty-one species of land-shells collected by A. Issel at Tabiano near<br />

Parma, and 15 found by Prof. Tr<strong>in</strong>chese at Lecce near Salento, are enumerated<br />

by <strong>the</strong> former, Bull. mal. Ital. iii. pp. 167-169.<br />

The stray notes concern<strong>in</strong>g land and freshwater shells of <strong>the</strong> cont<strong>in</strong>ent of<br />

Middle and Sou<strong>the</strong>rn Italy are collected and arranged geographically by E.<br />

v. Martens <strong>in</strong> an appendix to Bull. mal. Ital. iii. 1870, to which <strong>the</strong> editor,<br />

C. Gentiluomo, has added some <strong>in</strong>troductory and bibliographical remarks.<br />

JJmbria. Thirty-one species of land and 3 freshwater shells, collected by<br />

G. BELLUCCI near Terni and Pervigia, are enumerated, Bull. mal. Ital. iii.<br />

pp. 113-118. The most remarkable among <strong>the</strong>m are Helix hispana, L.<br />

[planospira, Lam.], strigata, Miill., Clausilia leucostigma, var. opal<strong>in</strong>a, Ziegl,<br />

and C.piceata, Ziegl, Bithynia boissieri (Charp.), and Planorbis subangulatus,<br />

Phil.<br />

Tuscany. The occurrence of Melanopsis dufourei, Fer., ascerta<strong>in</strong>ed by<br />

F. L. Appelius, Nach. mal. Ges. p. 44.<br />

Rome. Twenty-four species of land- shells, collected by GUST. MANTOVANI<br />

<strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> vic<strong>in</strong>ity of Rome, <strong>in</strong>clud<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> Alban hills and <strong>the</strong> valley of <strong>the</strong> Anio,<br />

are enumerated by GENTILUOMO (Bull. Mal iii. pp. 41-43). The most remarkable<br />

are:—Zonites candidissimus (Drap.), Monte Mario, only one specimen<br />

; Helix ligata, Miill. [gussoneana, Shuttl], Monte Sacro, Monte Mario,<br />

Subiaco and Frascati; Helix nemoralis, <strong>the</strong> variety <strong>in</strong> which all five bands<br />

are confluent, only at Subiaco, but abundant; setipila, Zeigl, Subiaco and<br />

Tuscolo near Frascati; strigata, Miill., Subiaco; Clausilia piceata, Ziegl.<br />
