TOWS, submarg<strong>in</strong>al, with compound and much subdivided tentacle-like organs<br />

both outside and <strong>in</strong>side of <strong>the</strong>m, <strong>the</strong> latter cover<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> disk more or<br />

less completely. A. orientalis, sp. n., Verrill, Bon<strong>in</strong> Islands.<br />

Dicostoma fungiforme, sp. n., Verrill (ib. p. 70), Port Lloyd, Bon<strong>in</strong><br />

Islands.<br />

Homactis, g. n., Verrill (ib. p. 71). Column low, cyl<strong>in</strong>drical, with a dist<strong>in</strong>ct<br />

fold near <strong>the</strong> marg<strong>in</strong>; substance firm, surface smoothish. Disk not much<br />

wider than <strong>the</strong> column, concave, <strong>the</strong> whole surface, except a narrow region<br />

about <strong>the</strong> mouth, covered with small rounded perforated tubercles, arranged<br />

<strong>in</strong> wide radiat<strong>in</strong>g series, <strong>in</strong> which <strong>the</strong>y are crowded <strong>in</strong> several transverse<br />

rows. Tentacles marg<strong>in</strong>al, <strong>in</strong> life longer, with imperforate tips; <strong>in</strong> alcohol<br />

scarcely different from <strong>the</strong> tubercles <strong>in</strong> appearance. Mouth large. H. rupicola,<br />

sp. n., Verrill, Hong Kong.<br />

Stephanactis, g. n., Verrill (ib. p. 72). Column subcyl<strong>in</strong>drical, somewhat<br />

elongated, not verrucose; substance firm and dense. Disk exceed<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong><br />

column, covered with regular radiat<strong>in</strong>g l<strong>in</strong>es of short unequal tubercles.<br />

The outer tubercles or tentacles are largest, and divided <strong>in</strong>to several (3-5)<br />

short rounded lobes; <strong>the</strong> next with<strong>in</strong> are 2-3-lobed; <strong>the</strong> <strong>in</strong>nermost are<br />

simple, rounded, or papilliform verrucae. The disk and tentacle-like organs<br />

do not seem to be capable of contraction, be<strong>in</strong>g fully expanded <strong>in</strong> alcohol.<br />

Corynactis annulala, Verrill (ib. p. 74),=Melactis annulata, Verrill (1866).<br />

Heterozoanthus, g. n., Verrill (Am, J. Sc. xlix. p. 371). Polyps creep<strong>in</strong>g on<br />

<strong>the</strong> surface of sponges &c- by th<strong>in</strong> basal stolon-like expansions of <strong>the</strong> base,<br />

from which <strong>the</strong> polyps arise <strong>in</strong> l<strong>in</strong>ear series. Polyps short, capable of contract<strong>in</strong>g<br />

to a level with <strong>the</strong> basal membrane. Tentacles few, 12 to 24. Integument<br />

stiffened by foreign bodies imbedded <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> sk<strong>in</strong>, such as sponge-<br />

•?picula &c. H. scandens, Sherbro' Island, West Africa; //. mifti, Verrill,<br />

= Gemmaria swifti, Duch. et Mich; H ax<strong>in</strong>ella (Schmidt, sp.), Adriatic.<br />

SCLEROBASICA.<br />

Antipa<strong>the</strong>s taxiformis and A. melancholica, Desieada, West Indies; Arachnopa<strong>the</strong>s<br />

columnaris and Rhipidipa<strong>the</strong>s tristis, Guadeloupe : spp.'nn., Duchassa<strong>in</strong>g<br />

(I. c. pp. 22, 23).<br />

SCLERODERMATA.<br />

Results of 'Porcup<strong>in</strong>e' Expedition.—Dr. P. M. Duncan hav<strong>in</strong>g exam<strong>in</strong>ed <strong>the</strong><br />

Stony Corals dredged up <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> ' Porcup<strong>in</strong>e ' Expedition, has determ<strong>in</strong>ed 12<br />

species, <strong>the</strong> majority of which came from midway between Cape Wrath and<br />

<strong>the</strong> Faeroes; o<strong>the</strong>rs were also found off <strong>the</strong> west coast of Ireland. The species<br />

may be enumerated thus :—<br />

Five species which have lasted s<strong>in</strong>ce <strong>the</strong> early Cfflnozoic period, be<strong>in</strong>g<br />

found on <strong>the</strong> area dredged and as Miocene and Pliocene fossils elsewhere,<br />

viz.:— Caryophyllia borealis, Flem. : Ceratoeyathus ornatus, Seguenza; Flabellum<br />

lac<strong>in</strong>iatum, M.-Edw. & Haime; Lophohelia prolifera (Pallas);<br />

Amphiheha miocanica, Seguenza. Two of <strong>the</strong>se, Caryophyllia borealis and<br />

Lophohelia prolifera, occur likewise <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> recent fauna of <strong>the</strong> Mediterranean.
